Import an Track (an Activity that was exported as GPX) back into Activity?

I had an Activity (a track that was recorded on my Garmin InReach Mini 2) and I accidentally deleted it (from the Explore app on my iPad).  I didn't see any way to undo this, so I immediately ran to get my phone, put it in Airplane mode (to prevent Sync) and then exported the track as a GPX file.    Then I took my phone off Airplane mode and within seconds, it had synced, and the Activity was gone.

I then imported the GPX file back into the Explore app, and now it shows up.   So at least I haven't lost it.

On the Explore website, the track is now showing up inside the Unorganized library category.

My question: is there any way to get this track back into the Activities category?   It seems that I can move it to another Collection but that's not the same thing as the Activity category.

This is not a big deal, I'm just mostly curious if it can be done.

  • I don't think so.

An Activity is a recording which can include the data associated with any accessories. Once you convert it to GPX, you no longer have a direct recording and you lose any accessory data.

You might be able to import the GPX file into the Connect website as an Activity, and if the file is recognized as an Activity, download to your computer and then import into the Explore website as an Activity. I don't know if that will work or if it's worth the effort to try.

  • "into the Connect website"

Wait, there's another website?  I thought I had this all figured out!

  • HA! HA!

In the "old days", explorers (hikers, backpackers, etc.) used the Explore ecosystem with a handheld device (the Earthmate app predated the Explore app). People focused on fitness, used the Connect ecosystem with a fitness watch.

More recently, Garmin has integrated fitness and exploration (as well as automotive GPS, the Route Planner) into their devices.

"Activity recording" and "Courses" come from the Connect ecosystem, these are FIT files (as in FITness).

GPX (GPS eXchange) files are the traditional exploration file type.
