Compass bearing

Compass/bearing functionality in the Explore iOS app is awful. Blue triangle icon will rotate to indicate heading at times, and at others will be fixed in some random direction. GPS tracking works.

Apple Compass app works flawlessly, Apple Maps bearing works flawlessly, onX Hunt bearing works flawlessly, PaddleWays bearing works flawlessly. If I force quit Explore and restart it will sometimes work for a short period of time.

I have tried reinstalling the  Explore app. Explore has all relevant permissions granted. iPhone 16 Pro, latest iOS 18. This behavior also happened on my previous iPhone 11.

  • The position pointer arrow gives you two options for navigation: track up and north up. These settings are changed by tapping on the arrow. When the app is in track up mode you will see a line above the arrow. That indicates the app is using track up mode. This will orient the map so the arrow on the map will always have your direction of travel towards the top of the map. The arrow below will show the direction of North. The north up option will only show the arrow. With north up enabled the top of the map will always be north of your location. The arrow on the map will change based on your direction of travel.

With these things in mind, if the blue triangle icon is not functioning as designed, please contact Product Support so that the issue can be investigated further.
