Allow Open Water Swimming on the Garmin to be in miles or meters

Pool swimming makes sense in meters or yards, but Open Water swimming doesn't not make sense in yards. When you are out swimming a 4 mile race or longer, you don't want to have to convert yards to miles in your head!
Please allow miles for open water swimming.

Yes please, I want to be able to see my OW swim distances in metres (while still having my runs in miles).

    Fenix 3 owner.
  • What device are you using - I am currently using a Garmin Swim which is really just a timer and I add the distance in on connect in Metres. My runs are all recorded in miles. I am wanting to get a device for Open Water swimming just wondering whether it will still be possible for me to record my runs in Miles and my OW swims in Metres - I was thinking of getting the 920XT?
    • I agree. I also want my open water swims to be measured in miles. Apple Watch let me do this. Please make this change in the next update. My head hurts from having to divide by 1760.
  • This might be something you can do using a Connect IQ data field. One option is called AppBuilder that lets you make custom data fields based on formulas. You could take the raw distance and convert it to miles. I haven't tried it myself so I can't say for certain it'll work but it's worth looking into.

  • Yes please.  I cannot display open water swimming in miles or km, only yards or meters. This is not really helpful in the ocean or lakes. Please tell me how to change these units in garmin connect. Thanks.

  • Please tell me how to change these units in garmin connect.

Change Measurements Units to Metric in the Settings:

  • @trux not helpful at all. Please read the entire question before answering. The focus of this thread is that we want to be able to display swimming distances in miles. Your response simply shows how to switch between meters and yards. That's a basic skill I hope everyone who owns a garmin knows how to do. Thanks anyway. Hopefully someone else knows how to accomplish this or eventually this feature will be added

  • Sorry for the misunderstanding. Unfortunately switching between metric and statute is your only option in Garmin Connect Web. Other solutions are:

    1. Connect IQ app converting the distance to the desired units (not sure whether one exists, but if you do not find any in the store, you can request it on the developer forum)
    2. Custom local override script, or a browser plugin converting the units (I wrote similar scripts, so know it is possible, but it requires certain programming skills)
    3. Requesting the feature through the form at https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

My bet is that option #1 would be the easiest and quickest way to get the data in the format you want.
