Cannot upload any courses to Fenix 3 - Everything is soooo buggy and frustrating

i use garmin edge 500 for years, FR 620 over one year, so i think i'm on a right way (or not ????)

Create Course on Garmin Connect.
Then want to synchronize to Fenix 3

i've tried several methods. nothing fits right:

- Garmin Connect (web)-> Course send to device -> fenix 3 -> synchronisation error
- Garmin Connect mobile (iOS) -> Course send to Device (stops after 40-70%) -> error
- Garmin Express -> Synchronize -> error
another approach with create course on gpsies.com and transfer gpx and tcx files with garmin communicator:
- Garmin Communicator -> Send to Device -> fenix 3 does not support this filetype ....

Fenix 3 Firmware 3.1
Garmin Express 4.0.11
Garmin Connect Mobile 2.11.1 (the last but always buggy iPhone App )

thank you very much for anyhelp or hint

I have the exact same problem and would love to find a solution! Riding courses is so important.

"Restore Defaults" on my fenix 3 did the trick. I was able to send courses now.
Downside: you have to reconfigure everything... (takes me 10mins)
  • I have similar issue. I've made two courses - one I added via Garmin Connect (mobile -> bluetooth) but I'm unable to upload the second one - I get synchro errors all the time. Don't want to restore defaults because of a small bug. Garmin, do you have a solution?

EDIT: I did restore it to default settings but it didn't help - still can't upload courses (iOS 8.2, than 8.3 - still the same).

I finally got my courses synced again to my fenix3.
The culprit for me was: course names that are too long.

Once I shortened all the course names down to the number of characters that would fit on the watch display, I had no trouble syncing the courses anymore.

Another method that did work also was to connect the fenix3 to a computer in USB mode, open the folders on the device and put the gpx file directly into a folder named "NewFiles". The bad thing about this option is that the course is not available in Garmin Connect, since I put it directly into the device bypassing Garming Connect.
  • I tried shortening names but not that much as you did. I'll give it a try. And I have my courses created in Garmin Connect so manual upload could also do the trick. I'll try and let you know.

Shortening doesn't help in my case.

Uploading courses using Basecamp works best for me. Never had any troubles.
You have to use USB though...
  • I resolved it!
No Tools (Basecamp, Garmin Express etc) required.
Just copy the gpx file in the folder /garmin/garmin/newfiles (where the 1st. /garmin is the drive or volume the 2nd /garmin is the folder in the volume and /newfiles is the folder inside the folder /garmin)

The Problem for me was: I cant see the Folder Newfiles, because its hidden (on my Version of Fenix 3)
so the only trick is, to unhide the NewFiles folder:

    MAC (OSX):
Open Terminal: -> easy way search in Spotlight (press CMD SPACE and enter 'Terminal' )
in Terminal Unhide the Newfiles Folder : chflags nohidden /volumes/garmin/garmin/newfiles (just copy this command as it is)
    thats it!

    WINDOWS 8:
    Open Windows Explorer
Open Folder Garmin inside Volume Garmin
Press Administration (German Verwaltung) in the Ribbon Bar of the Explorer
    Check "Show Hidden Elements"
Klick right on the Hidden Folder "Newfiles"
    Press ALT ENTER (Properties)
    Uncheck "Hidden"
    Thats it.

    WINDOWS XP,7:
Control Panel -> Folder Options -> Show hidden Folder
    Open Windows Explorer
    Goto the Folder //GARMIN/Garmin
Klick right on the Hidden Folder "Newfiles"
    Press ALT ENTER (Properties)
    Uncheck "Hidden"
    Thats it

    Test on Mac / Windows:
Open Finder on Mac or Windows Explorer on WinXP,7,8...
    Goto Volume or Drive Garmin
Open Folder Garmin inside Volume Garmin, you will find the NewFiles Folder
drag any gpx files into this folder (use short filenames myride.gpx, LesAlpes1.gpx etc)

    Test on Fenix 3
    reject the device
the files are shown in Navigation -> Courses
(there is some time you have to wait, i think the F3 does internal conversion of the newfiles data)

Works like a charm! Great discovery mate.
