Export to TCX - Where's the Elevation Data?

Former Member

Hi,

I use a Garmin 310xt during my running. I usually upload my data to the Garmin Connect site. I also like to have the data locally on my laptop, so I export it as a .tcx and import it into Garmin Training Center.

Up until 3/7/2015, elevation data was exported as part of the .tcx file. Since then, whenever I export, there is no elevation data. I can see the elevation data on the Garmin Connect site, but it's not exported to the .tcx and not imported into my Garmin Connect.

Anyone have any idea why?

I'm wondering if Garmin uses Google's elevation data, and if they are no longer allowed to export it.

I know they display a Google map on their website, and I know they display the elevation data on the Garmin Connect site. I also know that they can export their own elevation data (in a .FIT file).

I'm wondering if it may be something like this: Google's terms of use say that the elevation data can only be used in conjunction with a Google map. By allowing you to export the elevation data, Garmin can not guarantee you are going to use the elevation data with a Google map. Therefore, exporting the elevation data violates the terms of use.

    Possible?
  • I've been monitoring this forum group for a month wondering about it.

I personally can imagine someone writing on a marketing white board:

    1) Stop giving elevation data away for free

    2) ????

    3) Profit !!!

    [American "South Park" television reference]

But I've pretty much decided it's a new feature of the website rather than an unintended bug.
  • No more altitude in my export too (gpx, tcx or fit)...
My Forerunner 15 didn't record elevation data, so exports used "Elev Corrections" until now.

Stange that viewing details of old activities on Garmin Connect site missing the elevatio graph too!

    Come on Garmin....

    Hi,
just to say that I have the same problem with the missing elevation. I have 910XT (but I don't think this matters) and the last correct export is the March 8 one. The problem affects both the tcx and the gpx export. The fit export (export orignal) contains some elevation data but converting it it's not the same.

    Waiting the fix...

i still have problems with the elevation data.... still missing. What if Garmin sells the connect to the strava team? This could be the solution...
The problem last since weeks already...

    Hi all,
If your device records elevation data (my edge 305 does it), try this workaround :
1/ From GC, export your activity in the "original format"
2/ Add a .zip extension to the downloaded file
3/ Uncompress this new zip file and you'll find a tcx file with elevation data
    Hope this will help
  • Just noticed this for myself for the first time. Have a new Edge 1000 and all my elevation data is missing from the Garmin connect exports. Appalling.

If you don't mind a workaround:

You can download the 'old' Training Center software from Garmin here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/colle...t=999-99999-04

Import the FIT file and export it again as TCX. It will contain both speed and altitude plus a number of extra data.
