Access Denied Error Message

Anyone else getting the following when trying to go to Garmin Connect?

Access Denied

You don't have permission to access "connect.garmin.com/.../" on this server.

All these issues that keep occurring is getting pretty frustrating.
  • These forums are mainly user to user. As previously advised since this isn't a universal problem and one that only a few experience, so no help to resolve it from users here, you should contact Product Support.
  • ...and therein lies the problem. As noted, several people with this problem have contacted Garmin [in my case several times] to no avail. In all cases the people I spoke with were nice, sincere and in each case I was told that "somebody from engineering will get back to you."

This, of course, has yet to happen which is why so many of us are upset and frustrated. We have all paid a premium price for Garmin products [again, in my case several] and we are not getting what we paid for. I am certain there are many people you have this exact issue who will never find this site and, perhaps, have given up on trying to use Garmin Connect.

This is the ONLY site with this problem I have come across. If the end users are concerned, shouldn't Garmin be as well?
  • Well I tried following your video and couldn't force my system to get the Access denied error ... everything worked as I expected it to.

I would love the opportunity to do a screen share and see what is different about your system and / or the way you are conducting the test vs. me and many others.

One obvious difference is your location. One theory could be that EU-based customers aren't being locked out due to different Akamai configurations. This would also explain what a German-based dev team at Garmin doesn't see the issue or give it proper attention.
  • For everyone contacting Garmin, here's some ammunition when dealing with level one, script-reading support. It won't actually, help, but it will at least get you a case number faster, and out of the generic support cycle.

    1) It's NOT your network. This is what they will fall back to and translates to "I don't know." Proof: I have tried my test and received the same error on Comcast in Philadelphia, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile in Puerto Rico, some dude's cable modem also in Puerto Rico, an office connection in New York City, and another home-based connection (I think satellite based?) in Orange County, California. Furthermore, the "Access Denied" error message is generated and sent by Akamai servers, Garmin's CDN provider.
    2) It's NOT your browser. Proof: I have reproduced the issue within Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Furthermore, when the problem appears, any browser on any computer or device on the entire network sharing your IP address is locked out. If you switch networks or IP addresses, the problem INSTANTLY goes away (until it happens again.)
    3) It's NOT your computer. Proof: Same proof as #2.
    4) It's NOT a firewall. If it was a firewall, it would likely be either work or not 100% of the time. In the extremely rare case that it's a firewall blocking based on repetitive access, then users would have similar troubles with other sites. Finally, the error messages aren't coming from a Firewall. The error messages are coming from Akamai.

    What it "might be":
    1) Security. Why? Since all computers, devices and browsers are blocked from the a given IP for a period of time, this looks a WHOLE lot like a poorly-administered DDOS prevention system. Basically, block any IP address with more than "x" requests in a time period. If this is the case, "x" is set far far too low.
    2) Geography. Why? We have reports -- but nothing independently verified -- of people in London (and I'm assuming Germany) not having issues. Since Akamai is a distributed worldwide system, perhaps one region is set up correctly and another is misconfigured.
    3) Account. Unlikely. Why? Perhaps there is some account-based voodoo going on here. There were some early theories about "spaces in your account name" or whatnot, but it is extremely unlikely due to the fact that I have been able to reproduce the errors logging in with both my account as well as Facebook SSO ("SSO" is the process of using Facebook's login process.) In this case, Garmin handles authentication through simple tokens.
    4) Unknown unknowns. We only have so much visibility here, even those of us who are professionals. Ultimately, Garmin engineering may or may not be aware of this bug, and what it ultimately takes to fix it.

    Idea:
Could everyone having this issue please simply reply with the following information?

    6) Account Name
    7) Signon-type (direct login, Facebook login, something else)
    8) Anything else, including exact error message, video, screen cap, etc.

  • FYI:

All of my information is the same sans
    4] Southern Ohio
    7] Only direct log in
8] I think most people will also notice that once they received the "access denied" message the same problem will occur when trying to access the "Garmin Connect Status" page.
  • Idea: try accessing the site with a TOR browser. This will change your apparent IP address.

I was viewing my data on Garmin Connect, all in a sudden was prompted "Access Denied". I connected Wifi with my MBA & iPhone 6, both cannot connect to Garmin Connect. My internet connection is fine and can visit garmin.com and any other frequent sites, but except Garmin Connect. However, I found that when my iPhone uses cell connection, I can connect to Garmin Connect. Therefore I rebooted my router and now everything comes back. My ISP is Hutchison HK.

Seems that I was too early to conclude the above. The connection to Garmin Connect was again Denied even I rebooted the router again! But after above 10 minutes, it resume again.

I was working with my data and has opened over 10 tabs in Safari connecting to Garmin Connect, will that be the cause?
  • Yes. It seems like heavy, concurrent usage is one quick way to trigger Garmin's bug.
