Connect does not update yesterdays data

I use Forerunner 15 (2.40), Garmin Express 3.2.29.0 (recently updated), and Garmin Connect (Firefox) on Windows 7.

Since Saturday (I think) when Forerunner updated its software via express, it does not report yesterdays results
with sync to connect.
The info on Forerunner is still there though. Have not had this problem before.

Whats going on? Bug in the software? Some mistake in my setup somewhere? Any workarounds?
  • I'm betting that there is a 99.9% chances that the missing steps due to this issue will NOT be recovered, as the files used to sync with the stored data are GONE.

So if you had issues with missing days, please only consider the "new" data (from today on)

I extensively tested what was happening on my watch.

It is the software on the watch that is the problem. As the problem is in the watch I expect much of the following to apply equally to a Mac.

Once you have the problem activities are recorded by the watch but deleted before Garmin Express can upload them. So unless you know how to undelete files your activities are lost. If you can undelete the activity it is possible to manually upload them here http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activities and click "import" on the right hand side. On a PC this free software https://www.piriform.com/recuva can probably recover the files if you are fairly competent PC user.

The step (and apparently sleep - I don't monitor this) activity is created when connecting to a power source and intermediate times on some pre-determined pattern by the watch. If not connected to a power source one is usually created at midnight. Once you have the problem deletes the last but one every time it creates a new one. Connecting to upload to Garmin Express creates a new file and deletes the previous file. So only the current data is uploaded. To get the most accurate step data you can upload as close as possible to midnight or before going to bed.

I believe the next bit to be correct although I have only tested it n my watch you might find a different result ...

To fix (or at least temporary fix these problems until they reoccur) you can conect your watch to your PC and let Garmin Express upload what it can. If you then navigate with windows explorer to the file system on the watch which is mounted as a drive letter within windows - mine comes up as "Garmin Forerunner 15 ( K: ), but most peple are likely to see an earlier letter in the alphabet than K: probably E:, F: or D: . Once you have located the corect drive letter for the watch you will see one folder "GARMIN". Double click that and you will then see around nine folders. Double click "ACTIVITY" and delete everything in there. Then go back to the GARMIN folder and double click the MONITOR folder. Delete all the files in here. Then soft reset the watch (power it off) hold the power(/light) button for 15 seconds - turn it back on. If just comes on you didn't do it long enough try again - you need it to look for GPS to set time when you turn it on. You will need to go outside for it to find the GPS fix and hence the current time.

Your watch will now work normally ... until it goes awol again - I suspect this will happen at the end of the month but it is difficult to tell when you are testing blind.

Note to Jim_m_58 I suspect yours has righted itself because for whatever reason it has (reported by you) removed last months files.
  • I just uploaded my data after following the steps of clearing the watch folders and restarting and can confirm it does appear to have logged the last three days since, so thank you to those who worked that out.

I tend to average around 100k steps a week, but am now a member of the 35k a week steps challenge because my last few weeks have included many zeros. Thanks Garmin

Uggh none of the suggestions worked and Garmin appears to be asleep at the wheel. So frustrating. Enjoyed the watch when it worked, but currently it is essentially worthless for anything beyond mapping a run.
  • Look again tomorrow to see if it's working. You'll not get any steps/activities back from the time there was a problem. That's what you deleted off the Fr15. Those files are how stuff gets passed to GE/GC...

Thanks. Giving this a shot. Will post again in a couple days of my results.

Yes I'm also giving that workaround a shot.

I think there might have been an issue related to timezone/time schedules, because mine add 74 .fit records in monitor, but the ones from 31st till the day I connected to Garmin Express, were missing. >400kb of free space though.

This is bad. Worst would be if I lost my Activities, which I didn't.

But it beats the purpose of using the watch everyday if the Monitoring does no sync properly.

I don't blame anyone thinking of buying this watch, to look for something else.

I followed penyghent's steps and it's worked for me for two days in a row now:

    Sync watch

Locate watch drive in explorer/finder and select

You will see one folder "GARMIN".

Double click GARMIN folder and you will then see around nine folders.

Double click "ACTIVITY" and delete everything in there.

Go back to the GARMIN folder and double click the MONITOR folder.

Delete all the files in here.

Soft reset the watch (power it off) hold the power(/light) button for 15 seconds - turn it back on. If just comes on you didn't do it long enough try again - you need it to look for GPS to set time when you turn it on. You will need to go outside for it to find the GPS fix and hence the current time.

NB This will not fix previous days, as those files have been deleted from the Activity and Monitor folders. But, that was okay with me. I'm just happy that it's working properly again.

I am still having an issue of all my activities being saved at Greenwich Mean Time, though I am +10 and have the correct time zone selected in Garmin Connect. I have no idea what's going on there!

Deleting FIT files and soft reset worked for me! I was worried about missing steps for Friday after a night out. I tried to hurry and get back before midnight just in case but I synced exactly at midnight so had no idea what would happen. Luckily no steps lost. So after soft reset I have 3 FIT files created on 2/12/2015, 1 FIT file created on 2/13/2015, and 2 FIT files created on 2/14/2015. So looks like new FIT files are being created for each new date again and not deleting previous ones.

Not so good was Garmin Support responsiveness... I opened up a ticket online on 2/3/2015. Called next day to get faster response they did troubleshooting over the phone, no resolution, confirmed my ticket was still open and would get back to me by email. Called back again 2/6/2015 and confirmed ticket was still open and being looked into. Haven't heard anything email or phone from them since...

Luckily looks like things with my FR15 are okay for now from soft reset.
