Can't assign shoes to activity on dashboard

The new gear tracker feature is great. I have 3 pairs of running shoes that I rotate through, so I don't have any set as default. I noticed that once an activity is uploaded to GC and I try to choose which of the 3 shoes I used directly from the dashboard, I get this disappointing "Sorry, we were unable to process your request. Please try again." This also happens if a shoe is selected but I try to change to a different one. The only way to assign gear is to expand the activity, then select gear. Anyone else having this problem?

Another bug/feature is that it is currently possible to assign two different pairs of shoes to one activity. I don't know anyone who starts a run with one pair of shoes then switches mid-run. While this is not a big deal (just select one shoe, deselect the other), Garmin Connect should probably automatically deselect one shoe when another is selected. Other tracking websites do this and I believe it's a simple algorithm modification. This auto-deselect would be especially useful if the "default" shoe is assigned to an activity but someone wants to change the assignment.

Automatically delect a shoe.... makes sense for shoes but the bike and multi sport folks have more pieces to track. I have chains/tires/tubes/cassettes/ etc that I am tracking and all go on at different times so I need to have multiple "shoes" for every activity.

FWIW - I only went into the event itself to edit this - you showed me I could edit this list on the dashboard... this is great for my workflow.

Yes, me. I bought a new pair of shoes yesterday and ran with them today. Uploaded the activity to GC and cannot believe how unintuitive it is to assign the activity with the shoes. Apart from that, I finally figured out how it is supposed to be done (sigh) and it does not work anyway - probably due to the problems with GC.
Again, a great idea from Garmin but very poorly executed. I work for a firm that sells software and I just cannot understand how this site (GC) is run - I have been using it for a year now and there are still things that are not working after all this time. Bad impression.

If you go to the full page view of activities, click on the specific activity, and then "add gear", it works fine. Did it a few times over the last few days, including an hour or two back. This using gear I had define a couple week back.

Yup, I've just done exactly this a few minutes ago. I went back from this morning's run right through to last March (using the scroll arrow to keep moving to the previous run) to add my shoes to each run.

Well I tried that yesterday and again today, just now. All I see is the same dialogue-box that appeared, when I first entered the new shoes. However no gear is offered for selection. I tried two other browsers (Chrome and Firefox) on my computer and it does not work with these either!

    Yes - now its working

OK, I deleted my new shoes, a Mizuno model that was not offered on the list, and added them again this time selecting the item "Mizuno Unknown" and now it is working.
So it seems as if you can only specify gear that GC has in its database and offers for selection, although the field allows me to type in anything i.e. free text. Whatever it was, its now working for me. Thanks for the help.

    P.S.
To Garmin: it would be nice if GC would allow us to display "gear" as a column in the list of activities. That way we could use it as a sorting or filter criteria.;)

This is odd. On Saturday I added two pairs of shoes using the description of my choice, and even edited the name of one of the shoes after assigning to runs with no problem at all.

found this while I was having issues doing the same thing.

I wasn't offered any list of products to pick from when creating/adding my gear.

Anyway, I think i found my issue. I think it had something to do with the date. My gear start dates where all yesterday i.e when I entered them in. But for some reason the uploaded activity (which was also yesterday) showed a date of the correct date and time but 2009.

changed that to 2015 and it all worked.

so thats another bug, why did my activity say its 2009, noticed that on the 910 xt the date was also 2009. It wasn't my first sync either, I did that initially when i first got the watch. Have tried since and it seems to say "today" or "yesterday" as opposed to 2009.
  • Yes, I am having trouble assinging which pair of shoes I ran with. Why is it so complicated? We should only have to click on shoe that we ran with. Can someone please explain how to do this? I do it correctly most of the time but I actually have no idea how I did it. Are we supposed to select shoe we ran with and deselect other shoe(s) we didn't run with? Please fix this GARMIN!!!
Also, when you click on "gear" it brings up each shoe you have listed but doesn't have total mileage for each shoe. The only way I can see total mileage is when I first log on. Please fix this. We should be able to see mileage of each pair of running shoe when we click on gear.
  • Great h/w... s/w not so good...

    Ok
    1) If you want to add gear to a previous activity you HAVE to enter the date you started using the shoes

upon creation of the gear, else you won't be able to add the gear to a previous activity...

    2) If you want to see total milage you HAVE to enter the MAX milage again upon the creation of the gear...
