brand new Garmin 920XT won't sync with Garmin Connect -- fail.

I purchased the Garmin 920XT training watch recently. After about a week, it no longer synchronizes with the Garmin Connect website (last activity to sync was 11/26).

Please read: this appears to be Garmin Connect issue (see troubleshooting steps taken to narrow issue down to the Connect website).

Here's what I've tried:

1. Garmin Express (on a new, Windows Surface Pro 3, running Win 8.1) -- every day, I get an increasing number of sync errors with the message: "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin Servers. Please try again later." I'm now at "34 items to sync" (all failed) ranging from hiking Activities to Wellness files. fail.

2. Garmin Express (on a Mac running Windows XP via Parallels) -- doesn't recognize the 920xt when plugged in via USB and I can't find drivers to manually download. fail.

3. Bluetooth sync (Samsung Galaxy Note 2) -- "Transfer Failed". fail.

4. Wi-Fi -- "Transfer Failed (1 File Failed)". fail. **see note

5., 6., and 7. Garmin Connect website using multiple pc's, mac's, and browsers -- going to "Activities" and "Import" to upload the hiking activity's FIT file (after downloading the FIT file from the 920xt watch) result in "undefined" error. fail.

8. Correcting the "FIT" file with the Garmin file fixer tool (can't seem to find the link offhand), same as the above. fail.

9. Manually editing the "FIT" file -- fail.

10. Whatever other methods I tried and have forgotten. fail.

**note: there is more than just one activity/file missing

Surprisingly, here is what does work: using SportTracks. I can actually manually import the hiking FIT file into the SportTracks (both PC app and website). There is absolutely nothing wrong with the file and the data and route show up perfectly in SportTracks. To me, this means the issues is with Garmin Connect.

So, how do I get Garmin Connect to work?
  • Same problem for me, tried wifi sync, bluetooth sync, garmin express (cable) and also manual file upload.
  • For what its worth, I received my 920xt on Friday 1/10 and it's had no issues syncing to Garmin Connect over wifi or via phone BT or direct USB connection. I ran saturday and ran today, both (and some goofing-around test activities) all synced up fine. I'm using the 2.64 beta firmware and Garmin Express 3.2.28 on mac.

I do get a 404 error clicking on "get more" for watch faces or data fields, going directly to apps.gamin.com has worked fine (keep GE open)

Custom activity profile prevents sync with 920xt

I had the same problem after creating and using a custom activity profile for XC skiing. Garmin Connect syncs repeatedly failed in the app and via Garmin Express on a Mac. I could manually import the activity to Strava with the 920 attached to the Mac (which is ultimately what I care about). After reading this forum, I deleted the questionable activities from the History on the 920. This has solved my problem and this morning's swim and all other data is now successfully transferring in the app via Bluetooth. This solution works for me because I only care about the data eventually getting to Strava and only use Garmin Connect as an intermediary. Hope this helps some of you.

After deleting custom activity profile data the watch did a sync. I hope they fix this bug soon. I lost a nice chunk of data!

I just don't get it, how many times has Garmin gotten away with issues and problems over the years? I really like the product but come on already get your act together before you release a product. This is not some sub $100 watch. This is supposed to be cutting edge top of the line. Are they working on this issue or just getting ready for another release for President's weekend sales???
  • Probably just sitting around waiting. Which Garmin products do you have? What specific problems have you had are you having?

Numerous products over the past 15+ years from marine installed, handheld GPS, numerous GPS watches and now a $499. 920XT that won't sync as described in my user's manual. I keep coming back, but I really wish there would not be issues with the products I've purchased over the years. I hope you understand my frustration and everyone else who is also having these issues...

An interesting point is that Strava and Training Peaks are reading all my rowing workouts made on other activity and Garmin system is not able to read.

I have the same issue; a *.fit file that will not sync from my 920xt and I get a 'undefined' message when I try to Import into Garmin Connect.

The file was created using an Added/Create Activity type "Hiking". This seems to be a common thread.

The activity imports fine into Sporttracks & Strava with no problems. Again another common occurrence.

No luck with the online Fit repair tool. Fails Import.

I read one post where someone had their file repaired by another user. Does anyone know what was done to fix the file?

Recently started receiving "sync failed - device connection error". Have to manually sync via Garmin Express. Have tried to close out of app on iPhone and power cycled watch. Error occurs each time the app attempts to sync. I do have two 'created' activity profiles for cardio class and weight training that utilizes heart rate data.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

I'm having the same problem with my recently purchased 920, won't sync to Garmin Connect the paddling profile I've set up but will cycling? Keeps coming up with "server error". Agree with the comments above we all spend a lot of $$$ with them and it would be good if these things were tested thoroughly before being released. I don't want to have to add my sessions via the upload/manual activity function
