brand new Garmin 920XT won't sync with Garmin Connect -- fail.

I purchased the Garmin 920XT training watch recently. After about a week, it no longer synchronizes with the Garmin Connect website (last activity to sync was 11/26).

Please read: this appears to be Garmin Connect issue (see troubleshooting steps taken to narrow issue down to the Connect website).

Here's what I've tried:

1. Garmin Express (on a new, Windows Surface Pro 3, running Win 8.1) -- every day, I get an increasing number of sync errors with the message: "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin Servers. Please try again later." I'm now at "34 items to sync" (all failed) ranging from hiking Activities to Wellness files. fail.

2. Garmin Express (on a Mac running Windows XP via Parallels) -- doesn't recognize the 920xt when plugged in via USB and I can't find drivers to manually download. fail.

3. Bluetooth sync (Samsung Galaxy Note 2) -- "Transfer Failed". fail.

4. Wi-Fi -- "Transfer Failed (1 File Failed)". fail. **see note

5., 6., and 7. Garmin Connect website using multiple pc's, mac's, and browsers -- going to "Activities" and "Import" to upload the hiking activity's FIT file (after downloading the FIT file from the 920xt watch) result in "undefined" error. fail.

8. Correcting the "FIT" file with the Garmin file fixer tool (can't seem to find the link offhand), same as the above. fail.

9. Manually editing the "FIT" file -- fail.

10. Whatever other methods I tried and have forgotten. fail.

**note: there is more than just one activity/file missing

Surprisingly, here is what does work: using SportTracks. I can actually manually import the hiking FIT file into the SportTracks (both PC app and website). There is absolutely nothing wrong with the file and the data and route show up perfectly in SportTracks. To me, this means the issues is with Garmin Connect.

So, how do I get Garmin Connect to work?
  • My advice, would be to clear everything off and start again from scratch, following the steps in the manual.

    Thanks.

I contacted Garmin Support. They walked me through a few options. They were friendly and helpful. However, there is still a question outstanding about one particular activity type--which seems to sync okay using Garmin Express (an older version) installed on my Mac, but not using the latest version installed on my PC. And, I will be trying a few more manual methods of uploading the finicky activity files in the meantime.

I had this issue. Here's how I fixed it:

    1. Close and remove Garmin Ant app from computer. It interferes with syncing of 902XT. This was app for old version of watches that used ant stick.
    2. Download and install current version of Garmin Express. Older version did not work either.

Things worked perfectly after this. Good luck.
  • When trying to work out a sync issue, it is best not to try it on a different platform, as once it syncs there, the platform where you see issues may see it as an old activity, and not sync it, leading people to think the sync failed.

I have a brand New 920xt. I could not get garmin connect to see my wifi access points. After calling the software group at Garmin I learned the Garmin 920xt is a 2.4ghz device. If your wifi is running at 5ghz the 920xt will not see it. Once I switched my access point to 2.4ghz it worked perfectly.
  • Any news on this?
    I have the same problem.

This is getting really annoying now.
I have used my device for about 10 days now without any problems, but now I cant upload my training files.
They upload fine to my Trainingpeaks account using cabel (se attachment), but i want to use Garmin Connect and auto sync.
This has worked perfect earlier this week.
I have tried with Bluetooth, Wifi and now cabel, also turned off one and one + disconnected/connected again.
Maually upload to GC does not work as well.....

Yesterday i also tried to reset mye 920xt to factory default and sat several hours to get all my user data++++ back again.
After i did this it worked again for my late run last night and i tought everything was ok again, but today the problem is back;-((

The Device start to sync, byt cuts off halfway and i cant upload the file and the error comes.
The Acticity tracking is ok, but my training files dont upload.

    PS:
I have tried using the Fit File repair tool, but it does not work and i cant to this everytime for every upload i do.
  • I have the exact same problem.
I have done every possible remedy and it will not sync most runs/exercises. Super frustrating on a 500.00 device.

I have this same issue. I think it relates to a new activity type I set up for Hiking. The hike acivil shows on my garmin 920xt, but will not sync on garmin connect. I also have to go to garmin Web to get it to sync with my fitness pal and bring over the calorie info. Can anyone assist?

Hey all. This appears to be a common problem. I have a 920xt and am also having trouble syncing with garmin connect. However, so far this only appears to happen for a new "other" activity type I set-up for paddling. I can see all the stats fine on the watch and can manually upload the file to strava but cannot get it to work on Garmin Connect. Last night someone on another forum helped fix my .fit file with the fit file repair tool http://fitfilerepairtool.info/ after which I could upload it but again not something I can do every time.
  • It's been reported elsewhere, mainly with reference to ski profiles I think, that custom activities with HR are causing problems at the moment. Apparently a fix will be included in the next update when that eventually arrives. Check the 920 threads for corrupted fit files and/or ski profile problems for a possible workaround.
