Updated: Are you having issues uploading to Garmin Connect?

8/26 3pm CST Update:

The original issue of not being able to upload activities that started late on 08/25 was fixed around 8am CST on 08/26. The issue however remains for many of you not being able to upload activities that you attempted to upload when our site was down. We believe this is due to the fact that Garmin Connect detects what it thinks are activities that it had previously uploaded successfully when the system was broken. Many of you are mentioning that when you currently sync, things appear to work as intended short of seeing your recent activities in Garmin Connect. To correct this issue the only solution is to manually upload any activity that will not currently upload to Garmin Connect. To do this please follow these steps:

  • Log into your Garmin Connect account
  • Connect your device to the computer via USB (devices that transfer via ANT will need to skip this step)
  • From Modern View go to your activity history
  • From the Activities screen click "Import" from the left hand side of the screen
  • From the pop up window click "Browse" and locate the activity file that you want to upload to Garmin Connect (ANT device users please read the following FAQ which will provide the location of where your activity files are stored on your computer: Why are my activities files not being stored on my computer once I have uploaded them to Garmin Connect using Garmin Express?
  • Once the file is located click the "Upload activities from file" button

The pop up window should then indicate whether or not the file uploaded successfully.

Another easy way to quickly tell if the issue described in the first paragraph is the problem is to create a short activity on your device and then try and upload it. We believe that file will upload successfully. If you still cannot upload your activities please post a reply to this thread using the template outlined below.

  • When did you last try to upload your data?
  • What method did you use? Garmin Express? Garmin Connect Mobile?
  • What device are you uploading your data from?
  • Are you getting any type of error message when you are uploading? If so what does the error message say?
  • What happens when you attempt to upload the file manually? Do you get a success message or an error?
  • What is your Garmin Connect username? (likely the same as your forum username but please note if otherwise)

To wrap up on behalf of Garmin we would like to extend a sincere apology for any inconvenience anyone has experienced as a result of not being able to upload their data to Garmin Connect.
  • I speak for myself as well as several buddies that I run with daily.. our runs from yesterday are missing. They do not show up on Garmin Connect. However, we know they uploaded. How? Because, the runs appear on our Strava accounts which are set to slurp from Garmin Connect. So where is our run?

The activity does not show up in the Activity Listing either.

While I could manually upload the data and probably will since I still have the file, myself and the countless others should not have to. And what about those who no longer have the data file?
  • Folks, Garmin had a software problem which made it impossible to upload new activities to Garmin Connect for a day or so. I've worked in software for more than 30 years and I wish I could say that my software is infallible, but I've made mistakes too, some which my testing failed to uncover. It happens, hopefully rarely.

I uploaded my one "missed" cycling activity affected by this Garmin problem by using the Import option. For the Garmin Edge 500, which I suspect is similar to other Garmin devices, the activity file is found by opening the Garmin device on the computer (it looks like a removable drive called "Garmin" on my Mac), then opening the Garmin folder, and then the Activities folder. A list of .fit files are listed there, one for each activity. I just pointed the manual import to the last one with the date of my "missed" activity and it uploaded right away. I had to use this "Import" option because during the downtime this activity that wasn't uploaded was somehow flagged as being uploaded (from my attempt that failed yesterday no doubt) so the automatic syncing through Garmin Express wasn't working for this specific activity.

This should work whether the activity file is on the device, or somewhere in your computer (it wasn't in my computer, but it was in the device as explained above). If it's in your computer, Garmin has provided instructions for how to find it.

It the activity file is actually gone, like totally gone, and not to be found anywhere on your device nor on your computer, then it's time to accept that high tech glitches happen now and then, stop cursing Garmin (which generally provides pretty good products for the price, and keep in mind that the price of Garmin Connect is, well, free, not a bad deal actually) and move on. Losing one or two activities from your logs may be traumatic but it will probably be a survivable event.

I was able to load my "missing" activities using the import option as detailed in the post by the admins, so everything seems back to ok now. But Slichten626 I have to disagree with you. I also am a programmer (for over 20 years now) and sure we make mistakes but Garmin totally dropped the ball on this one. They didn't even *post to this forum* that there was a problem until the *next day* leaving us all in the dark. This is not ok. As to the price of the software, it is not free. Consumer products today almost always have some online component and it is assumed that we pay for this as a bundle when we buy the device. These devices in particular are not nearly as useful without the online component. The attention that Garmin gave to this problem (or the lack thereof) will certainly color my decision making process when I buy my next device. And I have been a loyal Garmin customer Since the very first Forerunner.

I have a ForeRunner 10 and haven't been able to upload to Garmin Connect in a very long time. I have to go to Classic Temporary to upload my data. Thank you for not getting rid of the Classic otherwise I'd be a very unhappy runner. I can then switch to modern and see all my data and stuff.

I agree it is frustrating when there is down time, but it happens with all web sites and services, and Garmin could have handled it better. You are always free to vote with your wallet, but do check out the forums for other models and makes before you do so as they all seem to suffer from similar issues, some more than others.
  • I have followed your instructions and found the .FIT file from yesterday on my watch (FR220) and I have manually imported it successfully. I have also tried syncing a test run from new and that has worked normally too. Thank you for the fix.
You have some fed up customers on here now, although I think they should chill now that there is a manual fix. Maybe next time you could email all customers with a link to an issue like this where you say you are looking into the issue and will update it with news as you fix it. And also make it a sticky that shows at the top of the forum. It was the first time I'd used the forum and I think it was a bit of luck that I found this. Cheers.

    Major problems!
When I log on, sometimes my data is there and sometimes it not!
It doesn't recognise any of my courses or entries on my calendar on my iPad.
I have tried to change my user name and modern sees it but when I revert to classic because thats the only way I can upload from my 810 it still sees my old username!
I'm sticking with it for the moment, but I have to say my first impressions are not good at all!

I don't mind the issue itself, I know stuff happens. I DO mind the lack of communication/extremely slow response to complaints. Had Garmin communicated earlier, the annoyance would have been mitigated (at least for most people). Perhaps this is a great time for Garmin to examine it's customer communication process, and learn that the few minutes it would have taken someone to update the forums, or place a splash on the Connect page would have been time well invested in showing your customer base that you understand their frustrations (well vocalized thru these forums and elsewhere) and are taking action to address it.

Followed directions, still can't upload file

    Forerunner 220

I can browse to the workout file in question (dated yesterday), a .FIT file, but get an error message every time I try to upload it "an error occurred with your upload, please try again". Not very helpful.

I tried an older file (Monday's workout) to see if it would upload (it successfully synced Monday, so I don't know if it is a good test) and got the same error.

Any improved instructions for uploading files?

Completely agree with everyone's sentiment regarding our response time. Please note that we are working towards a much better approach to address our weakness when it comes to monitoring forums as well as social media. This will not be an overnight solution but I can assure everyone over the coming months that we will get better at keeping you informed of the issues.
