Segment leaderboards not populating

OK, I give. About a month ago I created a few segments from existing, unlocked activities. The leaderboards did not populate even though there was a notification they would. Yesterday I deleted them and created some new segments which I knew I would cross. Again, leaderboard doesn't populate although I have ridden 2 of the segments since they were created.
Is there some secret word I need to utter to make the segment leaderboards populate? Using an Edge 810.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx in advance,
TT
  • Still nothing as far as segments go. On a less positive note, the Garmin locked up this weekend while riding a brevet and using a loaded course for TBT directions. Didn't notice the lockup until nearly 6 miles later. It also locked up on the way to work. I am wondering what this thing actually does do correctly?

I would like to know exactly what Garmin are doing and why it's taking days to process this? If they need more processing power at Garmin why not just provision more servers. They should really send their dev's to see how the big boys at AWS/Google cope with load.

Well it's fairly obvious what they are doing.

They don't want to run more servers because of the costs involved. So they've just displayed this meaningless 'lot of segments to process' message instead.

I say meaningless because Garmin must be aware of the volume of activities that are uploaded to their service when they added this feature, and given that it calculates segments for each uploaded activity, there's no surprise extra load.

I wouldn't be surprised if their algorithm to calculate them is poor too. Perhaps this calculates things in an inefficient way compounding the problem.

Strava doesn't seem to suffer from the issue although I've not a lot of experience with their service. This may well be because Strava has a better algorithm and enough premium customers to provide servers to crunch the data.

As I've said before Garmin would have been better to have just accepted that Strava has won and embraced it with the features on their devices, instead of providing the severely broken and poor alternative they have. You have to pity anyone who has purchased one of the newer cycling devices on the back of the hype about Garmin connect having segments. At least those of us with existing devices haven't really lost anything with the segments not working because we didn't really have that feature to begin with.

If you want a "pay once" option, Sporttracks has a "Trails" plugin that you can use to define segments and compare times against your rides, i.e against yourself (obvious not an online leaderboard comparing against others) and a heap of other plugins and features make it far better than Garmin connect.

Personally I don't really care about how fast I am compared with some random stranger enough to pay strava per month.
