new "modern" Garmin Connect -- no upload button?

I got an invitation to try out the new "modern" Garmin Connect today, and saw the following:

"Our Garmin Express is the new way to transfer data to and from Garmin Connect. There is no 'Upload' button in Modern."

I am a linux user. I plug my watch in to my computer where it is mounted as a USB mass storage device. I copy the fit files off, and upload them to Garmin Connect using the "upload" button. Garmin Express is only available for Windows/Mac. Can you please keep the "upload" button in the new Garmin Connect?
  • Installing Garmin Express does not remove the Communicator Plug-in on Window or Mac, but it does remove ANT Agent - perhaps that is the source of confusion. You are correct that Express and the ANT Agent GCP combo store their files in two different locations, but Express is capable of managing files/folders in both of those locations.
  • Yeah, but all of the complaining ("Garmin is stopping me from using Strava!") is because the plugin doesn't look in the location that Express uses, not that Express can't manage the location that ANT+ Agent uses. Maybe one final update for the plugin would be a good idea?

SOooooo where does express store the files on my computer so I can manually upload to a 3rd party site??

But why can't they make the upload/import link easy to find? Why not a link on the left bar or on the top bar? Having to dig into the Activities section is very user unfriendly.
  • Because all uploading should be done through Garmin Express...

    Travis
  • "All" uploading can't be, since some people are using Linux (no Express), and some here have complained because they're using a version of Mac OS X too old for Express (and I assume there are Windows users in the same boat, although I've never seen one complain on the forums). But so long as manual uploading still exists, they have a way to get things to Garmin Connect. I agree there should be a way to get to the Import function right from the Dashboard, maybe put it in the gear menu of the Activities widget. (I do wonder where all the Linux hackers have gone, though; this might be an easy problem to solve with curl if you can figure out where to send the file.)
  • I did say 'should', right... But the system requirements for every Garmin device I've looked at fail to list Linux as one of the supported operating systems.

A while back I created this page to do uploads. I'm pretty sure it still works.

In your case you'll want to use Garmin Express. The "import" option mentioned in this thread is only useful for those who want to upload activities manually (such as the OP who is a linux user). You can find Garmin Express here:

Thank you for keeping a manual import (even if harder to find)!

Firstly, I often "tweak" the recorded GPX file, which means I'm generally adding from file not the device. Secondly, "upgrade your operating system to use our software" (the Mac version of Connect Express is not available for my release)... er, no!!

Like people care what the "system requirements" are. When you use Linux, you have to be a little creative and work things out for yourself. I gather the Linux community already has their own ANT+ software and their own Communicator Plugin, and they're both Open Source (or should be) so you can work on them. I'm a little surprised that no one has written the equivalent (or at least partial equivalent) of Express. It's been years since I used Linux on my desktop machines, though, so the community may have changed. I still use Linux daily remotely from my OS X desktops.

As long as Garmin continues to produce devices that mount as disks on the desktop and expose all their files, one can work around the lack of Garmin software (heck, I remember when they barely produced Mac OS X software, and all their maps required Windows to get onto devices from a DVD). I applaud them for that; as I understand it Suunto and Polar aren't so user friendly?

So you figured out what to do, so other's should be able to. It seems to me a simple shell script should be enough to do the automatic uploading from a device that mounts as a disk. The ANT+ devices are a little harder. People have also figured out how and where Garmin stores their updates, so that problem is also solvable.
