new "modern" Garmin Connect -- no upload button?

I got an invitation to try out the new "modern" Garmin Connect today, and saw the following:

"Our Garmin Express is the new way to transfer data to and from Garmin Connect. There is no 'Upload' button in Modern."

I am a linux user. I plug my watch in to my computer where it is mounted as a USB mass storage device. I copy the fit files off, and upload them to Garmin Connect using the "upload" button. Garmin Express is only available for Windows/Mac. Can you please keep the "upload" button in the new Garmin Connect?
  • Can't you still "Import" on the Activities page?

I don't have an Activities page in the "modern" Garmin Connect -- does it still exist somewhere?

AHA, found Activities, and upload. So is the popup notification wrong then, and this functionality is not disappearing?
  • You add the Activities "widget" to your Connect view... or simply go to http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activities and "Import"

Modern Garmin Connect is stupid and not user friendly

When you try and up load in the new modern on the activities page it keeps asking for a file and will not upload from the watch. It is crazy the new modern i will be switching back to the old version it is much easier to use.... Why do firms up date software and it is never as good as the older versions normally. I hate the new modern.
  • In your case you'll want to use Garmin Express. The "import" option mentioned in this thread is only useful for those who want to upload activities manually (such as the OP who is a linux user). You can find Garmin Express here:

    http://connect.garmin.com/en-US/start/
  • This new "modern" interface is rubbish. I cannot find any way to detect my device or upload files on my Linux pc. Its fine if I switch to traditional. With the andreas-diesner plug-in the traditional version still works fine. GARMIN DO NOT DITCH THE TRADITIONAL VERSION or I will have to use STRAVA only. I dont understand why Garmin do not port Garmin Express to Linux. They clearly have devs who could as they are developing android apps. Linux is growing, get with it.
  • First of all, the manual upload on Modern is Dashboard -> Activities -> Import (http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activities, Import at the upper right). It's well hidden, but still works.

Second, Linux users are famous for solving their own problems. Golden Cheetah exists, and is Open Source. Someone with the relevant knowledge should be able to figure out how to pretend to be Express so far as uploading to GC is concerned (like apparently Andreas Diesner has for the plugin) and add it to Golden Cheetah, or write something stand alone. Garmin (at least in the past and for now in Modern) allows web browsers to upload no matter what the platform, and many Garmin devices mount as disks, so you can grab the files off of it and upload them the same way the browser is doing a manual upload. The Communicator plugin is going to disappear for everyone on GC, so I don't think there's much chance the Linux plug-in will continue to work.

When I use Modern/Dashboard/Activities and hit Import, it just asks for a file to import. It doesn't recognize my Edge 510 even though I had no problem uploading to Strava. The Garmin Express seems to recognize my 510, but I don't see a sync or import button. My "fix" was to upload using the traditional Connect.

As others have said, why did they introduce this Garmin Express software when it doesn't work?
  • And the file that you want to import is sitting on your 510, which is (or should be) mounted as a disk. Navigate to it, select it, upload it.

With Express, you have to tell it that you want to link a device (apparently when it's mounted, since it isn't giving me that option for my VIRB Elite, which isn't mounted) to your Garmin Connect account. Then it will sync automatically.
