new "modern" Garmin Connect -- no upload button?

I got an invitation to try out the new "modern" Garmin Connect today, and saw the following:

"Our Garmin Express is the new way to transfer data to and from Garmin Connect. There is no 'Upload' button in Modern."

I am a linux user. I plug my watch in to my computer where it is mounted as a USB mass storage device. I copy the fit files off, and upload them to Garmin Connect using the "upload" button. Garmin Express is only available for Windows/Mac. Can you please keep the "upload" button in the new Garmin Connect?

Garmin, are you listening to your customers?

There was an upload button that easily took files from your device. Why would you make this difficult for us now?

Read these comments, and lots of other threads from your customers, and put your customers back in control, or they will vote with their feet..

I was trying to figure this out as well...and I'm a web developer, so it's not like I can't find my way around a web application. It seems ridiculous from a usability standpoint that one needs to go and use external software to sync with the watch when the older web app worked just fine (and I often find it just easier to switch over to the old version of GC and upload that way). In general I've found the modern GC to be way more painful to navigate. Aside from the fresh coat of paint it's a big step backwards in my opinion.

The older web app used the Garmin Communicator Plugin, which is itself external software. Garmin has indicated that the Garmin Communicator Plugin is being deprecated and is no longer supported.

So what about other logging tools that used the GC Plugin? Will I no longer be able to use them as well?

I am also not very happy with the "Modern" version. I have a Garmin Forerunner 210 and Garmin Express which recognizes my device. However, the "modern" version of Garmin Connect does not recognize my device and I cannot download the data. It keeps telling me to download Garmin Express, which I already have. If I switch to the classic version, I have no problems uploading my data from my Forerunner. Anyone from Garmin out there with an answer?

Good heavens! A web developer who can't hack changes. The new site works well and the manual upload is fine and easy to see. Expand the Activities widget and hey presto 'Import' appears. It's not difficult. It's not rocket science. It's just different.

And no I do not work for Garmin. But I do develop websites...

Yes, and no. If you read through the forums, you'll see that many people are having trouble 'Uploading' activities to 3rdparty sites. Often this is because they installed Garmin Express, which is the replacement software for the Garmin Communicator Plugin, ANT Agent, and a host of other software. As long as you avoid upgrading anything, my guess is that it will all continue to work. If you buy a new Garmin device or install the new Garmin Software to support some new feature of a device, you will likely not be able to use Garmin Communicator anymore.

  • Garmin Express and Garmin Communicator Plug-in can coexist on the same computer happily. However, Garmin Connect is moving away from the Garmin Communicator Plugin because the various Internet Browsers have said that they will be dropping support for these types of plug-ins by the end of the year, if not sooner. Other sites that leverage the GCP will continue to work, but once the browsers stop supporting them completely they'll need to move onto something else.

  • There have been some people who claim that Communicator Plugin is removed when Express is installed. Maybe that happens on Windows, but it didn't happen to me on OS X. I've been using Communicator Plugin and Express side by side all along, and still use Communicator Plugin to upload to RunKeeper and Strava (obviously I don't have any devices that need an ANT+ stick to transfer data, mine all mount as disks). So until bit rot takes Communicator Plugin, since Garmin doesn't develop it any more, or browsers actually do stop using plugins like Garmin claimed was happening in their post that announced that Communicator Plugin was end-of-life, it'll still work. I gather that the reason that people are having trouble once they install Express is that Express and ANT+ Agent store the tracks they take off the device in different places, and Communicator Plugin only looks at the old place. There are solutions for that that have appeared in the forums.

The big change is that Garmin Connect Modern no longer uses the Communicator Plugin at all.
