new Garmin Connect: some bugs, slow performance, some missing features

Hi,

could not find a place where I can post a feedback to the new Garmin Connect. - not sure, if you want any bug reports posted here (?)

issue: Segments
a great improvement! (Hope it will work soon. I marked a segment, noticed that 6 activities matched this but so far can not see any of these in comparison. Some guys posted a not this takes 24hrs to show up)

issue: general application site performance
site response time is slower than with the old app - which was not good at all. Hope you can figure out some performance improvements.

issue: Compare Button
does not work. activities do show a compare button (blue) but as a result the compare view shows no data. Button should be removed here

issue: Compare Acitivty
when selecting two activities do compare, the result site does not show comparison data.

my personal wish-list (enhancement feature requests)
I would like to connect to WITHINGS weight data.
I would like to have some more statistics from my runs (e.g. pace of the best lap/1km/5km segment of my last run)

I agree that we need a way to add manual activities like on the old activities page upper right hand corner. I do lap swimming and would like to have that as part of my recorded history

    thanks
  • I have added a manual activity but it won't let me add in my average speed even though it is a field on the manual activity screen.. Why show the field if you cannot enter it? What am I missing.

It looks like a bug in Garmin Connect. It isn't that big a deal since it is pretty easy to work around. I'll walk through all of the steps.

    • Click the three horizontal bar icon on the left edge of the screen.
    • Click the word Calendar.
    • Click the day that you want to create the activity.
    • Select Manual Activity from the popup menu.
    • Fill in the details and click Add to Calendar.
    • Click the new activity in the calendar, a summary window will appear.
    • Click View Details.
    • Click the pencil icon in the button bar.
    • Click Full Edit
    • Edit the distance field. The average speed/pace field will auto-populate.
    • Edit any other fields you feel like adjusting
    • Click Save at the bottom of the page.

If you have an Activities widget on your dashboard, and all you want to do is set the average pace, this becomes much simpler...

    • Go to your dashboard (you can get there by clicking the word CONNECT in the top left of any Garmin Connect page).
    • Activate the dashboard that has an Activities widget on it.
    • Click the + symbol in the top-right corner of the Activities widget.
    • Fill in the Activity Name, Activity Type, Date, Time, Event Type, Distance, and Time fields as appropriate.
    • Click Save.
    • The Average Pace/Speed will be automatically calculated.

I don't know why the upload feature has been removed from the modern version of Connect, or why a manual upload feature can't be included with Express for that matter???

What will I do when activities on my 910 don't automatically upload to Connect? This has happened a good few times already and the only way I can get them off my 910 and onto Connect is by manually uploading them using the 'upload' option. If the option to manually upload files is taken away from Connect is will make things very difficult as if it doesn't upload a workout automatically it blocks all future workouts from being uploaded.

Also there are occasions where I will use a different device and upload the .gpx file to Connect to keep all my workouts in one place. Removing the manual upload takes this option away from me.

All in all I think removing the manual upload feature from the modern version of Connect is a big mistake and one that should be rectified immediately.

I agree, removing the "upload" feature is a bad idea. I use an Oregon 450 for hiking, camping, geocaching and on my bicycle. If they plan on crippling my Oregon and expect me to also purchase an exercise specific GPS they are going to loose me as a customer. When I use the Oregon on my bike I also use the Garmin heart rate monitor and the speed/cadence sensor. I haven't tried to upload to the "modern" version of Connect directly from it, but don't really want to. I do a commute ride from/to my house to the area where i do my real ride. When i get home i download the data to Base Camp and trim off the commute portion of the ride and then export it as a GPX file. I upload the GPX to Connect and also use it to make KML files so i can keep my rides in Google Earth as well as in Base Camp. Additionally, I occasionally forget to clear the previous ride so have to break the last track apart and remove the other ride. So unless they want to build full route/track editing abilities into Connect, i'll continue to work this way for as long as I can.

As far as the new interface goes. I find it limiting and less useful than the classic interface. All my data was there in one spot. None of this clicking back and forth from screen to screen for different data. I do however like the side bar concept instead of a line of links across the top, and would have preferred that they simply add that to the classic interface. I can't stand the "modern" interface on Windows 8 so am not at all interested in it infecting other programs i use. I'm sure it's a great interface on a small underpowered device like a phone, and i could see and maybe even like it if Garmin used this type of interface on their hand held GPS units. But i find it way to simplistic and limiting, as well as unattractive (I think it looks like it's a construction paper mock up made by a 4th grader). No for a full interface on a large screen it has no business being there. Indeed, everyone i know that has Windows 8 has installed the program Start8 and set it up to bypass the modern screen altogether. I know one guy that only has one tile on his modern screen, and it takes him to the desktop. Windows8 is known as "M E Part 2" to many of us IT people.

The modern is awful. The gooey is cluttered and not well designed. They should fire whomever "designed" the interface. It's one of the worst I have ever seen for any application.

On Garmin Connect Activities Report "All Activities", it does not count activities like strength or similar only running activities. The report is the same for running than for all activities.

It seems that there has been some redesigning on Daily Activity page: map is now larger and all the curves (elevation, speed, heart rate, temperature, etc.) are longer. There are however couple of errors in abbreviations of European units:
    - official abbreviation for speed "kilometers per hour" should be "km/h" not "kph". Later would actually translate to something like "kilopondhour" which is of course nonsense;
    - official abbreviation for calories is "cal" not "C".
  • To be strictly accurate, it depends whether energy is being measured in big or little calories. The dietary calorie is usually the bigger one and the abbreviation is Cal or sometimes kcal.
  • For Player - click the play indicator at the bottom centre of the map
Is it really that hard to click the double headed arrow to expand the relevant chart?
Change the setting for HR in your profile settings. I wonder if the ability to change on the fly is to come. Changing from pace to speed changes that graph.
For the translation send an email to Garmin - worth a try even though they may not reply

If you would like to be able to change the HR display between bpm and %age, submit a feature request to Garmin.
