Hi all,

Yestereday I did my best 10km race, however, it doesn't appear as a personal record. I expected it would appeared "automatically" :( How it works? Do I have to do something else? I have a Garmin 910XT

Thanks!

  • As regards understanding the functionality - it is operating as designed (mostly) - it is designed to work on an activity not part of an activity - I can understand that some people may want that to work differently.

What is less clear is the tolerance that Connect uses to select a run for a PR it would be useful to know this.

However if your 10.04K run is not auto selected for a PR you can still select it manually.

I think there is perhaps an over focus on PRs in general particularly when you are selecting out part of an activity as due to the inherent inaccuracies of GPS on recreational devices it would be quite easy to have an incorrect PR for part of an activity particularly when you get down to shorter distances such as 1KM.

To me (and I realise that this is only my opinion) a PB should be set on an accurately measured and timed course - i.e. at an event - anything else is just a rough guideline on your current performance level.

    Yes the expectation is different.

For me, I am not a pro, it is not always easy to run on a track where the distance is known. And if I run in a stadium where it is 400 m per lap, why do I need GPS to count distance? I run 25 laps and I have 10 km. The GPS based distance and also the PB calculation based on GPS distance is more useful where you don't know the distance. It might not be perfectly accurate, but it is convenient. When running on road, I expect Garmin can "crop" my fastest performance out and do this calculation for me. This gives me some motivation and fun. And plus, we know we can reject some obviously inaccurate PB.

One more thing to add, what I expect was actually what I got with a FR620. I had one 620 for a few months before I switched to Fenix2 14 months ago. Until today, all my distance related PBs are still those logged by the 620. My best 5 km was logged on April 21 2014, and it was actually a 9.4 km run.

Now you see the difference? What is working with 620 never works with F2. I don't know if it is only my account, but this is a bug to be fixed.

    Personal Records

I had the same problem until I found the fix. I went into garmin connect on my computer, clicked on the drop down list, clicked on personal records (not the arrow but the link) and there was a spot to accept my new PR. That updated it everywhere.

    Hope this helps

Sorry but it does not solve this problem for me. I know where to accept a new PR, my problem is an obvious new PR does not appear where you described.

OK, I need to correct myself a little bit because actually I received one new PR recently, last week. I happened to run 5.01 km on 5/19, and Garmin recognized it as my new "PR" of 5 km, 32:45. Good job! By the way, when can I get my best 1 km refreshed? My current record is 7:16.1, dated 2014/4/21. Any 1 km within the 5 I did last week was faster than that.

I know people say this PR function is not designed as I would like to have. You need to try your best to run exactly the distance you want to measure and stop the watch immediately to have a PR. I say NO! This is stupid. A lot of apps like strava, endomondo, they can pick your best part of a run and assign PRs. Garmin themselves is also able to recognize a segment in any part of a run. You don't have to start your watch at the start point and stop the watch at the end point. And, what is more important, it works with FR620. I used to have one 620, it worked. In fact my best 1 km is recorded by the 620 I had. After I switched to F2, my best 1 km has been frozen there.

Thank you anyway. I appreciate your help.

Then use something that does. My Garmin Forerunner‑235 picks up the fastest 1km stretch from any run I record with it, and compares it with my 1km personal record to assess whether I have a new 1km PR just fine, as one of the features of the watch. If your fēnix‑2 doesn't do it but the FR620 (the latter being a running watch specifically), then use the FR620 if you want to update your 1km PR. If you no longer have the device, then maybe it's time to buy something else.

You can bang on about Garmin Connect not doing the same from uploaded run activities all you want, but it's neither a bug/defect when it simply isn't a feature of Garmin Connect to find your best 1km within a longer run, nor your entitlement to get it as a Garmin customer who bought (and received) hardware but pays nothing to use the Garmin Connect service on an ongoing basis. If your fēnix‑2 was advertised as having the feature on the watch's application code, you may have a case to claim the device is not fit for purpose – but is that the case? Your expectation does not set any objective standard that anyone else need observe or accommodate.
  • I have a weird problem. My Fenix 3HR records all PR's (1K, 1Mile, 5K, 10K, HalfMarathon, Marathon and Farthest distance run) but under Garmin Connect (PC) and IOS mobile app, the "Farthers distance run" does not appear although all the others do. I did assign it manually in GC but why didn't it automatically transfered it from the watch along with the other PRs ?
