Any Idea on when this will hit the UK, Mine is still the old looking website, or am I missing something?

The log on looks different and the App, but not the Desktop site.

i feel the question "where is the upload button?" hasn't been answered... "import" doesn't seem to find any devices.. so how do i upload from my device with the "new Look" connect?
i had "express" but it buggered up a number of things so i got rid of it.. the only way i can upload from my 810 is to switch to "classic" look..
  • If you go to the link provided in the post above yours you can click on the download button..... and then read about Garmin Express on the next page. It is supposed to handle the uploading of your activity files for the new Garmin Connect. There is no more upload button because it should no be needed if you install/setup Garmin Express properly.

except Garmin Express doesn't work properly.. Express can find my Vector pedals but it can't find my 810 and it can't find 910xt.. both those gadgets have been working perfectly well until express was installed cause then i was screwed to upload anything... Ant agent stopped working when i installed express... and i am way too busy to deal with this.. Classic View gives us a working Upload button. Surely it can't be difficult to add it to Modern View. And then all will be good.
  • Sometimes software has to change to make way for added features, or because the platforms the older software exist on become obsolete or no longer supported.

What was the case with the old Garmin Connect and Garmin Communicator, I don't know.

Despite the fact there are many complaints here, I doubt they represent more than a fraction of one percent of the users of Garmin Connect.

If you need assistance and can take time to tell us in more detail where you run into issues getting your activities to GC, then maybe one of the other users here can help you. I too am a user, not a Garmin employee. I have resisted changing to the modern Garmin Connect, but I've started going there recently and have not found any major problems.

Thank all of you for the help above. I spent a lot of time looking for the upload button assuming I was a real klutz at using the software. Now I discover there is not one! I also went to the import but it only reads files. I have downloaded the express and it has synced with my Garmin device. Going forward is the idea of the improved software that we run express first, sync to our device, close that software, open the usual Garmin site to see the download? As someone said only about 1% find this strange - I am one of the 1%. There must have been some software reason to split the functions into a locally stored software and the web site. Users are more tolerant of their own disruptions in the use of software if there are treated like adults and given the reasons for the "improvements" that are actually a disadvantage to some users. My 2 cents worth.
  • As general manager of a "large Electronic Instruments company" you should realize that most forums like this one that represent "large" companies are essentially user to user help forums. I'm not even certain the administrator is a Garmin employee. For certain all the active mods are not Garmin employees. There is a "super mod" lurking around some of the sub-forums that might be a Garmin employee, but I'm not sure of that.

However despite my vocal protests over moving to the new Garmin Connect with Garmin Express.... I finally did and I'm not sure what the fuss is about. I managed to find my way around and for the most part you just have to be an old dog that's willing to learn new tricks.

If you really want the CEO of Garmin to see this, you should go to their site for corporate investors and get the address info there to write a message to mail to him/her.

Your analysis of the steps necessary to see your data in Garmin Connect is not entirely accurate. By default, Garmin Express runs in the background, automatically detects when a Garmin device is connected, and immediately transfers data to/from Garmin Connect. The only steps you need to perform are to connect the device and to go to connect.garmin.com. You could choose to close the software and start it back up manually, but it seems that you'd be creating more work for yourself. If this is the course of action you opt to take, then the additional cost of starting/stopping Garmin Express is a cost that you have brought upon yourself.

For users of ANT+ fitness devices like the 910XT, the new upload process is the same as with the ANT Agent software, so there is no change in functionality for them. For users of USB fitness devices like the Edge, the old process was more lengthy. You had to go to connect.garmin.com, click the Upload or Import button, select and upload the files you wanted (possibly using the Garmin Communicator Plugin if you had installed it), and then view the files in Garmin Connect. For these users, the Garmin Express software has eliminated the manual upload process entirely. For users if USB devices that really like the old process, they can still go and click the Upload or Import button just like before; they don't need Garmin Express.

So for the two classes of fitness devices I'm familiar with (ANT+ and USB), the workflow using Garmin Express is exactly the same for one (the ANT+ devices) and simpler for the other (USB devices). If you like the old way, you can still do it that way. Seems like a win/win to me.

There must have been some software reason to split the functions into a locally stored software and the web site. Users are more tolerant of their own disruptions in the use of software if there are treated like adults and given the reasons for the "improvements" that are actually a disadvantage to some users. Garmin Express is a single piece of software that provides a unified mechanism to install firmware updates and transfer data to/from to a diverse collection of Garmin devices. I'm sure this could have been done with a browser plugin, but Garmin announced that they were abandoning plugins since browsers seem to be shying away from them these days.

As I see it, the functionality was split to allow users to get automatic uploads from their device without having to open a web browser. You get home from your workout, set your watch on the counter before heading to the shower or refrigerator. By the time you get back, your activity has been uploaded. This seems like a user experience improvement to me.

Consider also that if you owned multiple Garmin devices like a Nuvi, a Forerunner 910XT and an Edge 800. You needed to install two or three different pieces of software in order to be able to update the firmware on each device. Now you have one piece of software to manage updates to Garmin devices. This seems like a user experience improvement as well.

I'm another user that uses the Classic Connect to upload my Edge 810 (I have to use Express to upload my Vivofit).
The problem with Garmin Express running in the background all the time is that it prevents my Tanita BC 1000 scale from uploading and has to be stopped using Task Manager before I can upload.
  • My Garmin 800 fails to recognise the new site so I have to upload through the old site. I like the new site tho - any ideas????
