Actually it's not your 800 that has to recognize the new site. You have to install Garmin Express and it has to recognize your device. Then it can sync your activities with the new GC. Check in the Garmin Express sub-forum for post that will give you some info, or post a question there if no one adds more to this.
Just to add my two-penneth worth: I actually prefer the functionality (and look) of Strava to the new look Garmin Connect and if we lose the old style connect then I will ditch Garmin Connect. I still cannot upload my activities (from my Edge 800) in the modern version (where's the button?) and Garmin Express simply doesn't work (Win7 64 bit). Are there any other sensible alternatives to Garmin's web-site?
Bottom line is that I do not need/want/desire needless social interactions, a la Facebook, in my exercise regime and the Modern version seems simply to be all about that
What's missing in this thread is that older devices may not be supported by Garmin Express. I own one of these devices, GPSMap 60CSx. After installing Express I get "no devices found." I'm not looking forward to the day when the Classic interface is NLA. At that point I will be faced with upgrading my device, and I will certainly be looking at other brands.
I don't know if Garmin actually reads this thread, but I have feedback on the new site. They used to have a button to give feedback, but I guess that was depressing them because it disappeared a while back and I can find no where to give feedback on the new site.
Anyway, I've been waiting patiently for the new development team to "find their way" with the new site, but frankly it is just a mess! The layout of the activity view horrible compared to the old site. For one thing the graphs (heart rate, speed, etc.) are so flat that they are useless. Secondly all of the stats at the bottom seem to be just randomly scattered around. Frankly it's just awful.
OK, look, I'm a developer and I get that this is tough, you need to iterate new designs, etc. But please, get a UX person that really understands what we athletes want to see and how we think. How can I get any use out of a 1 1/2 inch tall graph? Has the guy doing these graphics ever done a 50 mile ride or even a 5K and wanted to examine his performance? I think not.
Really guys, I know you're trying to modernize, but you've created something that is so bad I just stay on classic and import the data into one of the many other "good" sites to view my data.
I Was reading through the thread but didn't notice an answer- Is there currently a way to automatically go to the "Classic" interface when I load up the site? Currently it goes to "Modern" and gives me an option to "Switch to Classic Temporarily" but I'd really like a "Use Classic by Default" option or something similar. The modern interface is giving me similar headaches to what other people mention in this thread.
I like classic and choose to use it rather than modern. But now I find the top half of my classic sceen has become a modern advertisement. This really annoys me. Respect mt choice please. If you choose to get rid of classic then I can either choose to use modern or ditch garmin and use another app (most likely!). Until then, get out of my face.
I have tried go with the new layout several times and always went back to the old look. I like to have much information together in one place and clear graphs without too many color and fanciness. Functionality is much more important to me than design. Design is for the looks not for the works. I dislike the new design so much that I would not go with Garmin again if my forerunner quits working.
