Clearly Garmin Express and Garmin Connect are conflicting

After the latest changes where you're asked to install Garmin Express as the preferred sync tool it clearly shows that things are not aligned between Garmin Express and Garmin Connect.

This is what works fine now:
- Sync to upload recorded training to garmin connect
- Faster sync

This is what absolutely NOT works:
- Send courses mapped in Garmin Connect to device. Connect says it has send it, but it hasn't.
- Send training planned in Garmin Connect to device. Connect says it has send it, but it hasn't.

I'm using a Garmin 310XT and I have the latest Garmin Express version 3.0.6.0 as of today. I have uninstalled ANT, communicator plugin and then installed Express. After that install I have also installed communicator plugin again because Garmin Connect asks you to when you want to send courses or training to your device.

I have noticed that files are now stored in different places. MAYBE Garmin Express and Garmin Connect forgot to align that part. Just asking ...
  • Expected by whom? Not such a good solution if you have a vivofit which requires Express. I'd like to see a decent update from Garmin saying when they will fix this properly. Right now I am switching between Express and ANT Agent by enabling and disabling the Garmin Core Update Service and stopping and starting the ANT Agent so I can use each as needed. Not the easiest of solutions.

Expected behavior according to Garmin. Have a read here.

I read the announcement. It says that Express and Classic Connect are not working properly. So if I connect the vivofit, and have the Modern Connect interface, I will be able to send workout to my watch?
    Is this correct?
    Did anyone try?

Well, this is their excuse. And a pretty poor one for those of us with a 910XT and a Vivofit.

So we have gone from a simple web uploader back to a machine specific software load?

    This sucks.

Yeah, it's like Garmin can't decide on its software direction. We began with platform specific software for analyzing GPS data. Now that has been eliminated and we have Garmin Connect. But we've gone from non-platform specific upload/download software to platform specific software. I think either one is fine, but please stick with one and just keep supporting it!
  • To be fair, I guess we have to accept this is a transitional phase and it will end up with reasonably consistent behaviour at least across Mac and PC, with only one piece of software that a new user will have to install. Incidentally, the communicator plugin was required for Connect and third-party websites, and it came in Mac and PC-specific versions, so I would argue it's not true to say we've gone *back* to a machine-specific setup.

It's a mess at the moment, though. I mainly use a 620, but I have a 310xt which I use for hillwalking and sometimes for long runs where I want to follow a planned course. Sunday put a bit of pressure on my sense of direction here and there, because I couldn't get the course onto the 310 and didn't have time to change all the software installed on my PC, and probably put some of it back afterwards to feed the 620.
Travis, it's not clear to me that you can currently install a software combination which does work for some combinations of device.

I don't own a VivoFit, so I don't really know. I have read on these forums that users are having success, but there are hoops to jump through to make it work. Essentially, they have all of the software installed (ANT Agent, Garmin Communicator, and Garmin Express). If they want to work with their 'classic' device (like a 910XT), they stop a service used by Garmin Express (on Windows this is in the Administrative Tools\Services control panel), then they start up the ANT Agent and do their thing. If they want to use the VivoFit, they shutdown the ANT Agent, start the Garmin Express service, and use Garmin Express.

Last week Garmin Support AU ( Australia) told me I should not be using 'Garmin Express' to update/transfer to my FR220. They said i need to use Garmin ExpressFit 2.0.1.0.
    Which i did.
Today when i went to open GEF it was replaced by GE 3.0.8.0 (with out my approval ).
Reading on the fr220 forum, GE 3.0.9.0 came out in the last 3 hours.
I have had several " wrong username or password" errors when logging into Garmin Connect today so i think there is a LOT going on in Garmin Dev at the moment.
  • Same watch, same problem...and it's 5 months on from this original post.

I did try reinstalling ANT Agent because that used to work just fine. Except now it's telling me my device doesn't support workouts. So now NOTHING works.
