Time in HR Zones (again)

I know this has been brought up before, but I can set heart rate zones in my Forerunner, but then in Garmin Connect I simply can't see a way to then view how much time I spent in each zone. I can see an average HR reading.

If I'm missing something basic then could someone point me in the right direction. If not, surely this is a fairly basic feature, and it seems slightly pointless to have the zones in your device (and also you can add them in your Connect profile settings) if you can't then view the information in Garmin Connect later.

Thanks
  • But if you don't tell Garmin through their Submit ideas to Garmin process, then it's unlikely Garmin will know how many people want this feature.
  • Thanks for the suggestion. I will submit the HR suggestion to Garmin.

I would also like to see Time in Heart Rate for my selected HR zones. It can't be that difficult. Or least time in a specific zone and the time above/below that zone. mark M
  • I'd suggest folks sync their data with Strava (it's free and easy now). Strava does this although I can't recall if it's free or a premium feature.
  • I'd recommend everyone try other sites. All of them do certain things very well, but all fall short on doing everything I want. I routinely use the free accounts on three sometimes four fitness sites. Garmin Connect, Strava, ridewithgps, mapmyride. And there are plenty more that are likely better if you are into serious number crunching of your data.
  • Strava's Time spent in heart zones is a premium feature, unfortunately.
  • I am just looking for one site that can import my Garmin Connect data and translate them into Time spent in Heart Rate for my selected HR zones, without having to subscribe to a particular site. I haven't found one yet.

    Garmin Training Center.
I use it all the time. It covers 4 items.
Time spent in each HR zone.
Distance covered in each HR zone.
Time spent in each SPEED zone.
Distance covered in each SPEED zone.
  • Hi Don,

I did download the old Garmin Training Center software and loaded a .tcx file. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work. It reads the file correctly and does not show the HR stats. May be the software is too dated to work on OSX Maverick. Thanks for the suggestion though.

    Hello Yxpers,

Did you set up your zones?

Top line click > Users > Profile > and build zones for HR and Speed.
After that, when you connect your device, a popup will ask if you want to change the profile and click "NO".
When you do that the software will put the new profile from the computer into the device.

Over time (several years for me) you will notice that certain speed ranges will generate a certain HR range over average terrain.
I make (HR zone 1) correspond to (SPEED zone 1) etc.

Of course, climbing a long steep hill will not fit the profile because the slower speed will generate higher HR.
The trick is to hit the Lap button at the bottom and top of the hill.
Then in TC you click that lap and the zones will show that the HR will be up in zone 5 while your speed in down in zone 3.
You knew it was the hill and would expect the staggered zones.

If you go do a regular workout and the zones do not match per usual then there are several possibilities and you might need to adjust the zones.
If the HR is higher for a usual SPEED zone then you were working harder or getting sick or knees hurt etc.
If the HR is lower for a usual SPEED zone then your fitness is getting better or you ran a totally flat easy course etc.

The point is that matching up the zones will help you see what is going on with your training.
