Scheduled HR parameters on Garmin Training Program wayyyyyy too slow

I downloaded one of themarathon training programs to my device and am finding the pace extremely slow as determined by the schedule. E.g. today was a 2h 15m run at 111-129bpm which was close to walking pace - v. frustrating

It was nearly impossible to get into any sort of slow jog without being alerted that my heart rate was too high. A similar thing happened when i tried doing a scheduled interval session.

The issue i have is that i'm aiming for a goal marathon time of 3.30 which is 5m km's, my scheduled HR training is waaayyy too slow for this goal.

I have entered my max HR or 187 as determined by my age (33) and entered a resting heart rate of 59bpm which i calculated.

Any suggestions?
  • Age related heart rates are best guess. Always a possibility that you have a much higher (or lower max). Best to get a max heart rate test ro Google one of the many ways to get a more realistic value your self.

How do you 'calculate' resting heart rate? It is an actual value that you take first thing in the morning.

And you might be better working to pace based training rather than heart rate too.
  • It looks like you need to setup your Training Zones in Garmin Connect (not on the watch) before you schedule your training plan. Once you've done that, click Save, then click the Send to Device button in the left panel of that page. That will update the zones on your Garmin device later. Then, you can schedule your training plan.

I did some tinkering to prove it to myself. I also found that you can't change your zones after you've scheduled the plan- you have to delete the plan from your schedule and then reschedule it to get the training zones correct for each workout.
