Import tcx/gpx courses into Garmin Connect

A local cycling club posts their courses/routes on ridewithgps.com. I saved their tcx and gpx files to my computer and then tried to import them into Garmin Connect but it failed every time. Finally I had to re-create their course manually in Garmin Connect's create-a-course feature (very time consuming and annoying) to send to my Garmin device (Forerunner 910xp), which worked. I'd like to be able to import the tcx or gpx directly from the Ride With GPS files though.
  • Garmin Connect won't accept a gpx file from Garmin Basecamp, wether it is a Route or Track seems it doesn't matter,
  • this link is broken

I'd like to see what the simple procedure is, but the link referred to in this post is broken

    support.garmin.com/.../case.faces

This simple procedure worked like a charm - simply treat the watch/device like a drive; click on the Garmin Folder; click on the GPX folder; and simply drag your converted GPX file into this and close the window. Safely remove the device, let it reboot and turn GPS feature on, go to waypoints and they should all be there.
  • FINALLY found a way to upload a track to my Garmin 500

I have been trying in vain to import/upload tracks from bikemap.net to my Garmin 500 and finally found a way (not so direct) that works:

following on a previous post (quoted below) I:
#downloaded the gpx track from bikemap.net
#uploaded the gpx track in gpsies.com
    # downloaded this track as tcx from gpsies.com
    # copied this tcx track to the "New Files" folder on my Garmin 500
    # start Garmin 500 and navigate to courses folder, and voila! there it was! (note i have tried the previous step with several different files and file formats and it has never worked before)

I was also able to manually upload the tcx from gpsies into Garmin Connect, but from there I was unable to "send to device" for whatever reason.
The above worked for me, seems a bit of a long way around but I'm just happy it worked after the following did not:
    - copying the gpx downloaded from bikemap.net to the "New Files" folder on my Garmin 500
    - converting the gpx downloaded from bikemap.net to tcx using some online converter and then copying the tcx to the "New Files" folder on my Garmin 500

I think I will never know why the simple copying files (gpx or sometimes also tcx) to the "New Files" folder on my Garmin 500 does not work as seamlessly as it should.

I found a way to upload a track:
    # download a track from gpsies.com (you can upload your tracks in several formats there)
    # download this track as gpx
    # in Gamin Connect you can go to Upload-Panel - choose manual upload (I don't know the correct english spelling because I am using the germin UI)
    # choose the previously downloaded gpx-file
    # now you have a new activity - from here you can save the associated track in your track-list
  • There are a number of interesting workaround discussions in this thread, but to Garmin, I'd really like to be able to simply import a gpx file as a course within Garmin Connect. Personally, I'd be happy if this was just the website but I imagine that others would like the same option within the mobile apps.

This seems like a relatively simple change and to have your customers with some pretty expensive purchases again searching the internet for alternatives is sloppy customer service. There is a quick win here and I'm pretty sure that a number of websites who monitor fitness devices would be all over this and thus provide good PR.

I look forward to reading about this getting sorted out on the DCRainMaker blog!
  • I have tried just about every variation of file format, and can't seem to get this uploaded.
I am downloading the gpx file from mapmyrun, for an upcoming race. it won't upload to garmin direction (undefined error), and I have tried using gpsies to convert to various formats. No luck.

Anyone want to give it a shot? http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/344406333

Or can you give me a file that you know works, so I can look at the xml data to compare?

    Thanks!!
  • TCX converter may solve your problem

My understanding of the problem is that GC cannot just read any GPX course, only if it actually contains activity data and was created on a Garmin device. This is, of course, frustrating. But, here is a work-around: I downloaded a free tool for PC named TCX converter (http://www.tcxconverter.com/TCX_Converter/TCX_Converter_ENG.html). I imported any GPX file and exported it as a FIT file and it the smoothly imports into GC as an activity. If you can't find it in your activities, it's because it'll carry the date stamp from the date it was created, so give it a distinctive name that you can search.
  • Tried all, none worked.

Thanks for all guys. Unfortunately I tried all spoken here, none worked.

I used to use Endomondo on my phone, importing a route was so simples there that I can't believe there is no "import" option while writing a route in Garmin Connect.

Well, in two days I got a new route to ride, gotta go completely analogical by now.

That worded! I had convert to TCX with "tcx converter", go to " + " (plus, upright in GC panel), upload activities, manual upload and than select the TCX file. After importing the activitie e exported as a course.

Could be much more simple, but at least worked.

    Thanks!

I know this is an old post but I did fix the mapmyrun file doing this....

Download the file from mapmyrun to a folder.

    Open GPSies http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do

Browse to my folder and double click the mapmyrun file.

Convert and choose "GPX track" and "save as" to the same folder.

Open Connect > Activities > Import (far right side) > Choose File > Browse to my folder > double click file > Upload activities from file.

WARNING...the date will be Dec. 2009 so after you rename it and go looking for the file to send to your device, you will have to go back in your list of activities to Dec. 2009.

    .tcx upload issues continue

Before my recent cycle tour I created careful routes using www.ridewithgps.com and exported them as .tcx which then smoothly uploaded to my Touring Plus by dragging & dropping into the 'new files' folder of my computer connected device. I checked they were there in the device - which they were, with changed names, but still recognisable.... However when I came to cycle them the device recalculated the routes, simply retaining the start & end-points, so my nice 50mile cycle track amble was replaced by 36 direct miles on highway....
Any ideas about how I stop this occurring?
