Import tcx/gpx courses into Garmin Connect

A local cycling club posts their courses/routes on ridewithgps.com. I saved their tcx and gpx files to my computer and then tried to import them into Garmin Connect but it failed every time. Finally I had to re-create their course manually in Garmin Connect's create-a-course feature (very time consuming and annoying) to send to my Garmin device (Forerunner 910xp), which worked. I'd like to be able to import the tcx or gpx directly from the Ride With GPS files though.

Bike Hike worked for me. upload gpx,tcx....file the then download to Garmin Edge 500
  • The problem with gpsies is that I've found the course will upload and somehow change the route with only the start and finish points as original. If creating a course in Garmin Connect was as good as it should be then potentially few of us would need to use anything else! Pity it's no good then!
  • Hi, it works perfect and quick

    Thanks

Thought this was going to be a right pain...However, its simple. Save the .gpx file to your PC hard drive. Connect your Garmin 800 to the PC. Right click on the .gpx file and Copy. In explorer go to your Garmin and open New paste the .gpx file in the folder called New. As if by magic the course appears in your Garmin Courses folder and works!

I have no trouble sending gpx files to NewFiles Folder on my Garmin Edge 200 from elsewhere e.g. ridewithgps to avoid re-creating a course on Garmin Connect. However the course is less accurate than Garmin Connect created course but one can manage logically on the roads!
  • there is an even simpler way to do this. use the garmin write feature on the ridewithgps website. this feature is only available to premium subscribers but is well worth the cost.
  • I used this method before. However, when I do the upload manually now, I get an error message telling me that the file is already uploaded.
When I open the link GC always shows me the same ride. Thought it had something to do with Firefox vs. IE, but neither did work.

I found a way to upload a track:
    # download a track from gpsies.com (you can upload your tracks in several formats there)
    # download this track as gpx
    # in Gamin Connect you can go to Upload-Panel - choose manual upload (I don't know the correct english spelling because I am using the germin UI)
    # choose the previously downloaded gpx-file
    # now you have a new activity - from here you can save the associated track in your track-list
  • OK, it works now. Apparently an earlier imported course was still there, but with this date/time: vr, 1 jan 2010. That's why it didn't show up on top of my activity list.
Afer removing this activity I could upload my GPX from gpsies and save it as a course. So, after saving as a course, don't forget to remove the imported acitivity.

  • The way that worked for me:

    Download the .gpx file
Upload the file into gpsies.com as a new track
Export as a GPX track file (.gpx)
Then upload that file into Garmin as usual
  • seems manually adding activities then import the gpx file has now been added to GC
