Daily Calorie Intake (Tanita)

Hi all,

Since some time I have a Tanita BC 1000 scale, and I read my data into Garmin Connect. I always found the daily calorie intake calculated by Tanita (or Garmin Connect, don't know) pretty high (it is around 3,500 kcal for me). I decided to revise my activity level downwards to 0, to check the impact on the daily calorie intake, but to my surprise it has no effect at all!

So now I am wondering how they come up with the daily calorie intake figure? I tried to Google it, but could not find an exact answer or formula. Ideally, I would like to derive my BMR from the formula, so that I can calculate my daily calorie needs myself. Does anyone have more info on how they calculate the DCI?

Thanks a lot for the help!
Cheers,
Thomas

Hi there, also experienced the same as yourself and very interested to find out how this works.

Had a fasting day with zero intake but Edge software says my daily calorie was 4144! Also did a 50 minute row which is good for about 700 cals. Not doubting the BC1000 readings as it is on the money in almost every area but this one is a mystery.

Interested in info as Thomas was, many thanks

In summary the daily calorie intake is not your daily calorie intake.

It is the daily calorie intake that you would require to maintain your current weight.

Consume less than that figure, and you should lose weight (well at least fat, as muscle weighs more than fat)

    Greetings,

I am curious about the DCI reading, and in particular its accuracy. Yes, I understand that the DCI reads what my daily caloric intake should be; less and I would lose weight, more and I would gain. The problem is that it consistently reads 3,500 or so. Granted, I would love to gorge each day on 3,500 calories. Unfortunately, I feel that number is way too high. I know, because I keep close track of what I eat, that I eat roughly 2,500 calories/day. I also exercise regularly... and maintain weight (205 lbs, 6'0"). So, what gives?

I also feel that this number is used in their "metabolic age" calculation, which the machine says for me is consistently 54 years old (I am 41).

I have searched online, and have found no answers to this question, but a few other folks seem to be having the same issue. The Tanita FAQ section does not have an appropriate troubleshooting section.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    All the best,
    Kuhrt
  • Hi Folks,
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I have the same question and this one never seemed to get solved.
    Any further thoughts?

Like the previous comments, my calculated BMR ranges from 3200kcal to 3800kcal. I know for a fact that I would be a balloon shaped person if I were to consume this much just to maintain my existence. Other calculations on the internet based on age and height would estimate my BMR to be ~1700kcal.

Anyone have any ideas why it's calculated so high by Tanita?
