What happened to my Topo map?

Still playing with my new Oregon 550t, and I downloaded Birdseye. Now my Topo map has completely disappeared and all I have is the Global and Birdeye. I really need that Topo map and it seems to have disappeared?

Help!

I'm not sure what you mean by "disappeared".

I have a Oregon 450, with Topo maps and Birdseye images. The topo contour lines are a bit hard to see with Birdseye enabled but they're there. Are you sure that your topo's are gone or just hard to see?

Check to see what you have enabled/disabled in your unit: Setup -> Map -> Map Information. You can turn off/on Birdseye images (and/or maps) there.

OK, thanks! I just checked and you're right, the topo map is in fact on the Garmin. Where it seems to have disappeared from is Basecamp. I need the Basecamp topo, but all I have now are Global and Birdseye. So how could it disappear from Basecamp? I haven't uploaded anything from my unit at all.

I can't help with that. BaseCamp should display preloaded maps (Topo 100K on your 550T) but I've seen reports that it sometimes fails to. Having all my maps loaded on my PC(s) this is a non-issue for me.

BTW, and a dumb question perhaps, but you have tried to see if you can (re)select the Topo maps in the dropdown list in BaseCamp? The unit must be connected for that to work.

Can I view my preloaded, downloaded, or preprogrammed map data on my computer?

That was it! I could have sworn that I didn't need the unit hooked up to Basecamp for the Topo map. So now I have a folder titled BirdsEye and one titled Topo. It appears that once you install BirdsEye over your Topo map, you cant do anything with it at that point, like make it fade into the background . Even on BaseCamp, that seems to be the story also, other than you can make the streets and roads disappear.

I sure appreciate your help! :)

If you wish you can copy the (entire) contents of your 550T to a removable drive (USB stick, SD card etc) and leave that in your PC. BaseCamp will then display the Topo 100K maps without requiring your (actual) 550T being plugged in.

Great tip! As I'm brand new to all this, it's pretty overwhelming to start, so I will be asking some dumb questions. But that's how you learn right? It's always good to find people willing to help newbies out. I'm an expert in a couple of fields, and I answer newbies all the time while attempting to not roll my eyes. ;)

No problem. I've been using Garmin stuff for about 12 yrs so I've learned a thing or two :)

When I first played around with Birdseye on Basecamp, there was a slide bar that allowed me to set the transparency. That worked a couple of times in the first 60 seconds then wouldn't do anything after that. Seemed like the Birdseye section I chose was permanent. That's why I made two sets of maps, then found out that they wouldn't work like that in the unit. My problem is that Birdseye doesn't seem to be able to be removed once installed. I've looked at every option in the unit and cant find a solution. Wonder if there's a glitch in Birdseye? Should you be able to manipulate that slide bar for transparency at any time?
  • Birdeye files are saved as .jnx files and will be in the Birdseye folder. You can delete them using windows explorer. They will also show up in Basecamp and can be deleted from there.

Not sure about the slider bar, it's been a while since I used Birdseye. I do know that you get a slider when setting up custom maps but having saved them that's it, they are 'set', so it may be the same with Birdseye?

It's my understanding that you can turn BirdsEye off and on in the unit. I've looked at every option listed and I cant find a way to turn it off. Does anyone know what this option is?
