Chrome OS Support

Hello everyone,

I am curious if there are any plans in the works to get a communicator working with Chrome OS?
I am participating in Bike & Build this summer and will be taking my Edge 500, but would like to pack a Chromebook instead of another laptop.
  • Bump! Garmin folks, Chromebooks are one of the fastest selling computer categories on Amazon. That's only going to continue as the machines and OS become more popular - please support GC on Chrome OS.

Anyone at Garmin have suggestions or workarounds? I have a 310XT and there is no way to connect to the Chromebook via ANT+ or USB. Any help would be appreciated? My days with windows may be done, but I need Garmin numbers to upload.

Trying to use Google Chromebook to download gpx file to Garmin 60CSx hand-held gps.

 Tried this. Didn't work for me.

here's what i did to work around this on my chromebook:

    1. login to connect.garmin.com
    2. click "upload" in upper right corner
    3. click "choose file" and select file to upload
    4. click "upload activities from file"

granted, this only works for uploading individual files; it doesn't do want the GC plugin does with detecting all new files and uploading *all* of them.

    hth,

there is no upload option for me connect.garmin.com.

I've got an approach s3 for sale if anyone wants to make an offer.
  • Agree that Garmin should develop a strategy for upload of data using the Chromebook OS. Consumer adoption of the Chromebook OS is increasing and these lightweight (relatively) inexpensive machines are perfect for travel - when many of us have our Garmin devices and are using them...

    Hi all,

I'm running on the Garmin Connect website on a ChromeBook. I can upload gpx files from my Etrex because the Etrex presents itself as an extra USB drive. However I can't download a course to my Etrex.

Given that the website can see the Etrex as a drive, I don't think there is any technical reason why I shouldn't be able to download a course to the Etrex, but the website seems to explicitly disallow it.

Bad show Garmin - I would like to be able to download a course to my Etrex from my Chromebook.

    Thanks,

    Ed.

You can manually upload your activities file using garmin connect site , BUT the firmware upgrade WON'T work on Chromebook.
To upgrade Garmin device firmware you will need a compatible OS , that means Windows or Mac.
  • Great to find this thread. I just bought an FR15 and as I set it up I see it is sort of crippled from using all the functions it has. Due to my chromebook.

That's not entirely clear. First, remember http://gawisp.com/perry/, a link where you'll find all sorts of Garmin updates, regularly updated. Second, certain Garmin devices can be updated manually, but I don't know if Chromebooks permit you to "shell out" to the command line or not, or give you enough flexibility to copy files to a Garmin device when it's plugged in. For certain Garmin devices (and I've done this with my Fenix), you need the gcd file that Garmin provides that contains the update. Copy it to the Garmin folder on the device, rename it to "gupdate.gcd", and unplug and restart the device, and it will go through the update procedure. (If you can't find the .gcd file directly, you can usually get it by grabbing the Windows updater and running unzip on it). I'm sure that not every Garmin device can be updated this way, but some can.

    Brilliant SCHINDER!

Downloaded gcd file for FR210 (2.70, device was on 2.60) from http://gawisp.com/perry/, renamed it to gupdate.gcd, copied to Garmin folder on device, disconnected device and => BEM! 'starting software update'. Checked 'About' afterwards on device => 2.70!
