Garmin GPSmap 62 squeaky case

anyone else have problems with their case? some on geocaching.com are having problems, i am one of them.

i contacted GARMIN thru email support, but they have yet to reply.

the seller is sending me an RMA, but now i'll be without a unit for a while and i'll be out some shipping charges. i wonder what GARMIN will do for me? anything? free case for it? for $400+ you would think it would be rock solid like the 60 series was, but the case appears to have some problems.

see below:

here is a link to the picture of where the squeak occurs. also when powering it on/off it creaks/squeaks. sounds like some play in the plastic housing.

heres my latest and last reply from garmin. i'll be walking away from the unit officially now:

    Dear Bruce,
We are not currently setting up any exchanges for units making a squeaking sound. The unit is still fully functional as a GPS unit and will perform all advertised functions.

yes, fully functioning, but built like a K-Mart branded GPS, not the Garmin self proclaimed "TOP OF THE LINE"
  • I just got my new Garmin 62st this past Saturday. I did not even think anything of the squeak that it was making from pressing the on and off button. Only after reading it on some other forums did I realize that people were complaining about it. I don't understand why you would want to press so hard on the case? Once I power it on, I don't have to press so hard on it again, and don't even notice the squeak. Just my opinion. This thing blows away my old 60cs! I can get a signal in my basement! My 60cs would never work inside the house without a clear site of the sky! This thing is impressive so far!

    Mine squeaks as well.
    Brand new from Cabelas Canada.
Unit itself is nifty but the squeak makes me whince a little every time.
I push as light as i can - just enough to turn it on or off and the ole squeak is quite noticeable. Kinda unfitting for a $450 unit.

Here is my work around for squeak on my new 62s purchased from Cabelas Canada.

I have a loud squeak as noted on several other internet forums as well.
The work around that works for me is when powering on or off - don't use your finger tip/pad...instead press the side of your finger nail onto just the button and viola no squeak. Silence is golden.

so let me get this right, we purchased a TOP OF THE LINE RUGGED GPS (per the GARMIN description) and we can't use our fingertip to turn it on, we have to use the side of our fingernail.

sorry, but are you serious? you are going to accept this solution? not me. so we are also not to hold it in our hands, we have to gently hold it in our fingers or something.

another solution to the squeak: return it and buy a delorme. squeaking problems solved. :o

    Hi Bruce,

I agree this is a poor showing for what is supposed to be a "rugged" unit - one of the main reasons i bought it.
But i am serious about what i wrote.
I like many of the new 62S features and am willing to gamble that the squeak does not indicate a more serious long term case structural integrity issue. Garmin have come out and said it's not a defect. So if it becomes a problem later, then we can from there.

Am i happy about this - NOT at all.
But I am getting so used to one thing or another not right because of hurried production deadlines that I just accept it now as a cost of doing business.

It wasn't a big adjustment for me to take an extra fraction of a second and use my fingernail.
    Cheers.

Started out not to bad but after the second day of use it is getting worse
  • Warranty

I no why not give the squeakers a 3 year warranty. They are supposed to be rugged they say that the squeak is not a problem so why not ease our fears & give a little more. If I have that assurance then I am fine with a little squeak & they are telling us that they believe in it as well.

Mine makes a squeaky noise when I push down on the navigator square button with the arrows on it. It really is frustrating that an over $400 device sounds like a toy. At least it works well.

Any solution on the fix? I thought about emailing Garmin as well.

    Hello,

what are the highest serial numbers you guys get at the moment?
Do the units still squeak at the start or after a while?
