Garmin GPSmap 62 squeaky case

anyone else have problems with their case? some on geocaching.com are having problems, i am one of them.

i contacted GARMIN thru email support, but they have yet to reply.

the seller is sending me an RMA, but now i'll be without a unit for a while and i'll be out some shipping charges. i wonder what GARMIN will do for me? anything? free case for it? for $400+ you would think it would be rock solid like the 60 series was, but the case appears to have some problems.

see below:

here is a link to the picture of where the squeak occurs. also when powering it on/off it creaks/squeaks. sounds like some play in the plastic housing.

I have the same problem (though, only on the right side of the GPS, under the power button) and will contact Garmin here in Sweden tomorrow. Please post the feedback you receive from Garmin.

The squeaking is definitely not acceptable for a device in this price range.

glad to hear others are having the problem (not glad for you though). i'm getting mine RMA'd from the seller (GPSCENTRAL.CA), but i have to pay for shipping back and will be without a GPS for a week or so, which is not acceptable, considering I already paid for shipping.

still no word from GARMIN. but when they reply, i'll update this thread with their response.

hank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to help you with this.

I have went to the site that you gave me, and there isn't many posting there. Plus I have never heard of this issue before so as long as you aren't bear hugging your GPSMap 62, then please return it back to the unit so you can get a fast return.
If they are unwilling to return the unit, then please contact your Garmin’s Canadian Repair Company for any Warranty needs. You can contact RayTech at: www.RayTech.ca

Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thank you and have a great day!

  • My guess is all of these units squeak, mine did - I just kept squeezing and the squeak went away - it squeaks no more. Probably the hard plastic next to the rubberized jacket. Had I not seen this post I would not have considered it a problem worthy of returning the unit but then the state of my hearing is such that things like this don't bother me. As long as it doesn't indicate a problem with a loose build that would cause water to enter the inside I'm not concerned.

My concern is tomorrow when I take it out for the first time on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge and I get performance as good as my 60csx.

I returned my squeky unit to Garmin and got a second one, which is perfectly silent. Just the way it should be.

Thanks Garmin for fast response and handling!

my 3rd unit is coming from gpscentral, most likely tomorrow. fingers crossed! she affirmed me it would be a SILENT unit.

i also heard garmin sent out an email to their CSR's stating not to RMA any more units and the squeak is normal.

if this one comes as a squeaker, it'll be going back and i'll either wait out the problems (squeak and altimeter is apparently whacky) or try a delorme.
