Maps from many old activities have disappeared

While revisiting some old activities (like 2013 old) I've noticed that the maps and most details have disappeared. It still has the distance/time/pace/calories & my notes, but everything else is gone. When I try to export to GPX or any other format it simply creates an empty file.

The kicker is that I'm absolutely positive this data previously existed. I've exported at least some of these activities to Google Earth before, and I can still see the route there. While I've downloaded this activity, there are plenty more that I haven't but would like to save.

Is this all permanently gone? Anyone have luck restoring these activities?

  • Activities marked as favorite (yellow star) are visible no matter how old.

Wow, looks like this is no longer valid. A week ago I was able to see my old "favorite" activities, but today it doesn't work anymore.

  • I am not familiar with FR 310XT, but the activity summary shows the file is in FIT format, and a Google search tells 310XT did support FIT files

Quite possible. However, now I remember, that originally I uploaded the file to Garmin Training Center (I did not use garmin connect back then), and later when I decided to switch from Training Center to Connect, I exported all my activities from Training Center (as TCX files, as this was the only option, I think) and imported them manually to Garmin Connect.

Could you export the file in both formats (FIT - the first option, and TCX) and post here?

When I use the "Export" option, I get a TCX file, so I think there is no way to get the original fit file.

So maybe the problem is with old files that were imported as TCX. Anyway, I think I'll contact garmin support about this.

  • Could you post the TCX file? I am curious whether it imports correctly now, on my side. And if not, whether I can find a way to make it happen.

  • I have an alternate Garmin Connect account which I use to test various things. I imported the tcx file and it displays correctly with all the data and map.

But I also noticed another thing. Old activities that were imported from GPX files do show a map, but the map shows only the start and stop point, and sometimes a direct line between these points (but sometimes no line at all). Looks like an issue discussed here:

    https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-web/432806/maps-missing-on-previously-saved-gps-activities-and-tracks-are-now-straight-lines-on-most-activities-which-do-show-a-map

So I guess things are as follows:

    • Activities that have been imported manually a long time ago don't display correctly.
    • Activities imported from TCX files do not show map nor graphs.
    • Activities imported from GPX do show a map, but do not show the correct gps track.
    • Exporting and re-importing seems to fix the issue.
    • For me it started fairly recently. Several weeks ago I was able to see very old manually imported activities.

I contacted garmin support about this issue.

  • Hi, I have the same issue as the above poster. I have only title and distance for all my saved tracks prior to August 2021. This coincides with an upgrade from an ageing Oregon 680 series handheld to a Montana 700 and Epix watch. I can download them from Connect as a ZIP file and view them on Memory map for instance.

  • Just a quick update:

Garmin support gave me a response to my issue report. I'm not sure I understood them correctly, although they responded in my native language, but the response said, that the issue occurred during a recent Garmin Connect refresh (whatever that means), and due to some technical issues activities imported from Garmin Training center were lost and are unrecoverable (which is obviously not true). Their recommendation is to import the activities again, if you have a backup. So my take-out is:

    • Garmin screwed up during one of recent Garmin Connect update.
    • Garmin won't fix it, although they probably could.
  • Now that I look, all my old TomTom activities imported as tcx have also lost their maps and charts. So it's not just activities from Garmin Training Center that are affected.

  • I'm still trying to escalate the issue through garmin support channels. Garmin Support asked me for additional information, which I provided, so there's hope that someone will look at it. I suggest that everyone who is affected by this issue contact garmin support. Perhaps multiple reports will encourage garmin to take care of it.

  • I already sent email to Garmin Finland regarding this issue earlier today.

  • Mine are all gpx files that are now just showing a straight line. I have files back to 2009. I will try exporting and re-importing but will report to Garmin even if that works. I really don't want to have to export and import 17 years worth of files! This has convinced me to save a copy of every file at home though.
