FR 970 Resting Heart Rate data is missing, although watch and GC are showing present HR all the time

I had Fenix 6 pro for 5y and replaced it with Fr 970 abt 4w ago only because F6 battery got very weak. But on FR 970 I can't see my Resting Heart Rate, although it is logging my hr continuously. I hv made restarts, factory reset, disconnect / reconnect with phone. I have only one acc in Garmin.

It is very strange that both watches have different menus in Garmin Connect and on FR 970 any option for activity tracking is missing. I hv activated Move IQ on FR 970, but all it does is to automatically detect an activity, like commute cycling, stair climbing etc. As comparison on F6, I did not activated Move IQ, but it still does track my RHR.

IMPORTANT NOTE: FR 970 is connected all the time and it is showing HR and Body Battery - on watch and in Garmin Connect, but there is no RHR detected.

So after trying all above, I am wearing Fenix 6 at night, so to see RHR in the morning and FR 970 during the day and during activity.

these options are not available on FR 970:

Square is HR graph obtained by F6 at night, for which I have and RHR.

I take F6 off in the morning and put FR 970

Oval is period with FR 970 on. I detected a nap, would detect bike or stairs, but no RHR

Same is situation with BODY BATTERY - F6 is showing the graph, FR 970 does not.

  • But on FR 970 I can't see my Resting Heart Rate, although it is logging my hr continuously.

That there is no Resting HR is not surprising, because the HR during the day is usually higher than during the sleep, so the value detected by your F6 is used. More surprising is that I do not see any HR at all during the day, on your screenshots. If you are sure the sensor is on, and the watch displaying the HR in real time, then I recommend to Remove and Add the Device From the Garmin Connect App | Garmin Customer Support, then log a few minutes of HR, sync, and see whether it helped. If not, then have a look at the Troubleshooting guide for (some) data missing after syncing for more tips.

  • BTW, I just noticed that the FR970 watch, unlike F6 and the Edge, was last synced only a few days ago. So there is the root of the problem. Sync it. If it fails syncing over BT, sync it with the USB cable to a computer with Garmin Express. You can also try restarting the watch and the phone.  And if it does not help, then do as I suggested - remove the device from GC, and then add it back. It won't fix the past days, but should help from now on.

If you are implying that you think activity tracking is missing, broken or disabled on FR970 because of the missing option in Connect, I can tell you that's not the case.

Garmin removed the ability to disable Activity Tracking on all their Forerunner/Fenix watches, a couple of generations ago. There's a few posts in forums about how FR255, FR265, FR955, FR965, Fenix 7, etc. no longer support turning off activity tracking, especially since watches like FR255 used to support turning it off, but that ability was removed in an update.

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-255-series/317404/missing-disable-activity-tracking-after-update-to-13-21

All it means is that activity tracking is permanently on for any watch which doesn't have the ability to disable it.

It's also not new that the Garmin Connect website asks you to use the Connect mobile app or the watch to change certain settings which used to be available for older watches on the website. This is also a well-known change that has applied to Forerunner/Fenix watches for the last couple of generations. It might have something to do with the new-ish "real-time settings" feature where almost of all the watch settings are also available in the Connect mobile app. I'm guessing that this feature is directly responsible for the fact that some settings are no longer available on the website (because the website doesn't support "real-time settings")

I'm not saying that there isn't a problem, but I am saying that the differences you see on the Connect website between Fenix 6 Pro and FR970 are intentional, well known, nothing new and have nothing to do with any problem you may be experiencing with RHR and body battery on FR970.

  • Hi and thanks, but FR 970 is constantly connected via BT to my phone. The problem is not from yesterday, it is since I got the watch. I hv done several disconnect / connect procedures and a full factory reset today, before posting here :-)

  • Resting hear rate is determined (I think) from the 30' with lowest average HR. It naturally occurs during sleep, but if, for example, you do not sleep for last 24h, the watch would still give you the resting HR bss this rule. My point is that FR 970 just does not keep log of the HR, hence it can't determine resting HR.

But I just saw a graph appeared!!! I will put an update here tomorrow.

I did not speak about disconnect / connect, but about syncing over the USB, and about removing the device from GC (using the instructions from the linked documents). That can resolve problems when some data is missing in Connect after syncing. Master reset to factory defaults, although it is likely to help too, is an overkill, and forcing you to reconfigure the watch, and restore all customizations, like activity data screens, etc.

  • My point is that FR 970 just does not keep log of the HR, hence it can't determine resting HR.

If you keep using the F6 for the sleep, the RHR will come from F6, regardless whether your FR970 syncs the HR to Connect or not (well, unless your HR from FR970 drops even lower during the day, than the HR from F6 during the sleep).

    But I thought you said

  • Hi! I did:

    - factory reset on the FR 970

    - removed the watch from Garmin Connect

    - restarted FR 970 on default settings (on previous resets I used either saved data from Fenix 6, or available back ups from FR 970)

    - connected the FR 970 to GC

    - it started tracking and recording the HR and very soon (few hours) I had my resting HR determined.

Tks to all who responded to my question!
