Activity map is missing when synchronizing with Strava

The activity map is present in Garmin Connect but is not transmitted to the Strava application.

I would like to point out that this problem only occurs when the activity takes place with a home trainer and using an old route that has already been recorded.

If I use the .gpx file from garmin connect and import it into Strava then the map is displayed correctly.

This is totally incomprehensible !

When I do a Home Trainer activity that uses an old route, Garmin Connect indicates in the properties that it is an indoor cycling activity.

Hi,

The activity is automatically transferred to garmin connect when my Edge 1030 synchronizes.

It is then during synchronization between Garmin Connect and Strava that the map activity is not transmitted.

I should point out that all activities other than "Home trainer" correctly synchronize the map activity.

Check your map privacy settings in Strava.

In Strava, does the activity show up as indoor cycling or virtual cycling? If the ride contains fake GPS data, it should show up as virtual cycling (and a map should be displayed), but in your case, I would expect to see indoor cycling, since the map is not displayed.

How do you start activities which use your indoor trainer? Do you use the Training > Indoor Trainer feature?

- as e7andy mentioned, checking the privacy zone might help. If the entire activity is in the privacy zone, the map won't be shown

- someone else mentioned they accidentally recorded their activity using the Indoor profile instead of the Training profile. They were able to fix this after the fact by editing the activity in strava and removing the indoor tag

How do I change the sport type on my activity to Virtual Ride or Run?

To classify an activity under a virtual sport type, the activity must be originally recorded as a virtual activity using a supported virtual trainer or treadmill. Performing this action will ensure that your activity file uploaded to Strava has the correct sport type information included. Athletes are not able to classify activities manually as virtual.

I realize that's not super helpful, since it doesn't say exactly what you have to do on the Garmin Edge side. I can only guess that if you're not already using Training > Indoor Trainer, the fix would be to do that.

There's also this old thread for Edge 1030+ which says that if you ride the entire course, the ride is incorrectly flagged as an indoor ride, instead of a virtual ride. The workaround is to not complete the course:

Specifically I do this:

Turn on 1030

Select "Indoor" profile if not already on that profile.

Select Training

Select Indoor Trainer

Select "Follow A Course"

Choose the Course I want to ride

Select "Ride"

Start logging by pressing the start button.

The secret is to never fully complete the course you are virtually riding.

I discovered this by accident initially but the result is reliably repeatable. If you ride the course to completion (the Edge 1030 Plus plays a tune and says the course is complete) then stop the ride the ride will classified as Indoor. However, if you stop the ride a few metres/feet short of the full distance then the ride will be classified as Virtual.

Whether the ride is classified as Indoor or Virtual appears to be dependent on where the distance is coming from when the ride is stopped. If you are still on the course then the distance at that point is from a virtual GNSS track so the ride is classified as Virtual. If the ride is stopped after the course has completed then any distance accrued beyond the end of the course is not on a GNSS track so the ride is classified as Indoor.

It would be nice if the option existed in the firmware to automatically stop the recording when the course completes (in the same way the various Tacx apps do). In reality I can't see this happening for the x30 models

Thank you for all this informations.

During my next Home Trainer activity, I will be careful to check the various points mentioned.

What bothers me though is that I have been using my Home trainer for a very long time and this problematic situation is very recent...

Yet I have not changed anything on my Edge 1030+ or on Strava.

Following your information, I found my solution...

Strava then indicates that it is an "indoor cycling" type activity and does not display the map.

Simply disable this information in the activity properties in Strava, which allows the map to be displayed.

I hope my solution will be confirmed during my next Home Trainer activity.
