New activities do not show up

The sync between my dinosaur Forerunner 301 and Garmin's web server worked fine for years. I could not upload activities earlier today because Garmin's server had an issue with Activity Uploads, as shown on its System Status page. I tried to sync Forerunner 301 a few times after the issue was addressed according to the status page. I even restarted Garmin Express to try it. Garmin Express shows everything is fine, with no error for sync. However, the Activities page does not show any of the new activities since my last successful syn on Jan 20.

I wonder if anyone else is experiencing this same problem today.

  • Verify that your Garmin Express is set to use the same email address and password as Garmin Connect Web

Open Garmin Express » click the image of your 301 » Tools & Content » Info tab

Make note of the "Registered to" email

Open Garmin Connect Web account information - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/settings/accountInformation

That email address needs to match what is in Garmin Express.

  • Thank you for lending your hand.

I have just followed your instructions to verify the email. Yes, the two email addresses are the same.

It had been working fine and I have not modified my account since it was created.

  • In that case...

    • Check that you have the latest Garmin Express version - Gear icon » settings » about. Version 7.24.0.0 is the latest for Windows
    • Remove the 301 from Garmin Express - right click » Remove from Express
    • Close and quit Garmin Express - Right click on the GE icon in the system tray, then Quit.
    • Do a short test activity with the F301 and save it.
    • Open Garmin Express then add the 301, use the email address used in Garmin Connect Web
    • Sync and check if the test activity and any of the other activities show up on Garmin Connect Web.
  • I followed your instructions step by step, including creating a new activity. Unfortunately, the problem remains.

Additionally, I closed the Garmin tab on Chrome, opened it on a different web browser - Edge, and logged in to check the activities. There are still no new activities. There have been about a dozen activities since the last sync.

  • I'll have to get my Forerunner 301 and try it. Should still work.

And to be sure, you are checking the activities list? connect.garmin.com/.../activities

  • Thanks a lot for the help.

Yes, I am sure I have been checking the activities. I still see all the old activities up till January 20.

My primary suspicion is that the issue was caused by today's server glitch. The status page shows the issue has been resolved. I wonder if the issue is still lingering. I do not know exactly what went wrong. One of my hunches is that uploaded activities get stuck somewhere on the server. This is why I asked whether others were experiencing the same issue.

I assume you can still upload activities today (not necessarily from Forerunner 301) after the glitch was fixed about 5 hours ago.

This is why I asked whether others were experiencing the same issue.

I recorded activities for every day between Jan 21 and Jan 28 (except one), and I saw every activity on Connect immediately after I synced my device (FR955), shortly after completing each activity. A couple of days ago, I saw a warning message in Connect about a service outage (not necessarily related to the current boot loop glitch, I think), but I was still able to sync activities.

I realize that FR301 is different from modern Garmin watches (e.g. it uses GPX files instead of FIT files), but what do you see if you completely quit Garmin Express (including closing the tray icon) and connect your watch to your computer with the charging cable?

Are your recent activities available in GPX format on the watch's file system?

If so, can you successfully manually upload any of them using the Connect website?

  • You cannot access the file system of the watch in this manner. This device was released 20 years ago. January 2005. Requires Garmin Express and/or Garmin Training Center.

  • Sorry my mistake! I searched for Forerunner 301 and accidentally looked at the manual for Foretrex 301, which does allow you to access the file system and copy courses off the device. Ofc that has no relevance to Forerunner 301 haha.

Based on other forum posts (as per you and
) it does seem like Garmin Training Center can be used to export activities from a Forerunner 301 though:

(Can't vouch for any of the links ofc)

So I would suggest something similar:

    - try to see if you can export activities from your FR301 using Training Center

    - manually upload the exported activities to Garmin Connect

  • I stopped using Training Center a long time ago.

Here is what I did this morning after waking up my computer this morning:

    1. I checked Activities, and new activities were still missing.
    2. I did the quit and sync to no avail
    3. I closed everything on my computer that I could close and did the syn again to no avail.
    4. I rebooted my computer and did the sync again to no avail.

I don't think my Windows PC, Garmin Expression, or my Forerunninger 301 has had any changes since January 20.
