I just dug out my old Forerunner 301 for my son to use while running. Is there any way to download the data from his runs and view them in Garmin Connect (or some other software)?

Don't feel bad. I still have a Forerunner 201 from 2004 in my vintage Garmin drawer. Mine uses a serial port connection. I think the differences with the 301 were the heart rate monitor and a built-in mini USB port. You can try to see if Garmin Express will recognize it, but you might need Garmin Training Center.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a copy of Garmin Training Center. Ergo the initial question :-)

Yes, mostly. I was able to download the Garmin Train Center (using the link above). From that I was able to read the data off the 301 and export the data. Once I had the exported data, I have been able to load it into a number of different apps (including Strava) to get what I was looking for.
