Garmin Nuvi 660 Problem

I can not Recalibrate my garmin. The touch screen sensor is so off that I can not even open settings. Is there any other way I can Calibrate my Garmin.
  • Several months ago I updated the firmware on my 660 and then all hell broke loose with it. The screen wouldn't respond correctly to my touch on the screen until I figured out how to recalibrate it. It worked like a champ for the past three months until I tried another update on it and now the screen won't respond to any touch on the screen to recalibrate it.

I'm very irked about this since I bought lifetime map and traffic updates for it and am out of my $$$'s unless it can be fixed.

Thanks for the tip on Sharcnet-USA. However they are full right now and are not taking any new repairs. What you had done to your unit sounds exactly like what I need done on mine. May I ask what you paid for your repair? I'll just have to keep checking their web site until they accept repairs again..

I just had my 660 repaired by a place called sharcnet-usa. They put in a new touchscreen, high-capacity battery and fixed my power switch which had been broken for 2 about years.

It looks like they never even opened it. Came back all cleaned up and not a fingerprint on it. Took less than a week to get back. Very pleased.

I tried the steps that Garmin suggested, I downloaded the new software update, that didnt work, then I deleted the GUPDATE.GCD file, held power down for two minutes and it says "Pre Boot Mode" ... and finally I was able to get to the calibration screen to press the dots - ha. It seems to work fine now! Thanks Garmin! :) I would love to buy a new one, but the 660 and I have been through some tough miles together and we have history! :)

I believe that this is a systemic problem, not an isolated event. I have two Nuvi 650 models that have BOTH stopped responding at the same time. This sounds like a recall issue to me. I could understand one failing, but not both.

I updated the firmware, but that didn't help, on either unit.

    Garmin's response was unhelpful.

These are the steps I took

    From Garmin:
I recommend you calibrate the touchscreen on your devices, and then test the unit out.

To calibrate the touchscreen on a nuvi 600 series:

    Power the unit On.

From the Where to? / View map screen, touch Settings (wrench icon).

    Touch Display.

    Touch Recalibrate.

A new screen will display that says Press Dot.

Touch the center of the dot.

Keep touching the center of the dot as it moves around the screen.

When Calibration Complete appears on the screen, please touch OK.

The touchscreen will now be recalibrated.

If your touchscreen is not responding to any touch and preventing you from recalibrating the touchscreen using the instructions above, please follow the steps below:

Connect your nuvi to your computer with a compatible USB cable.

Open the Garmin Nuvi drive located in MyComputer/Computer. (Note: Mac users can locate the Garmin Nuvi drive icon on the Desktop.)

    Open the Garmin folder.

Locate and delete the GUPDATE.GCD file.

Safely disconnect your nuvi from your computer.

    Power the nuvi Off.

Power the nuvi on by holding the power button.

Continue holding the power button down for 1-2 minutes until the screen calibration option displays.

Touch the center of the dot as it moves around the screen.

When Calibration Complete appears on the screen, please touch OK.

The touchscreen will now be recalibrated and should respond properly. .

Thank you very much!! This work for mine! :)

** Update 27 May 2011 ** Hmm.. I was to quick. My Garmin only work for a few days maximum, just like you all say. I hope Garmin can solve this by a software update, because I really like my Garmin Nav....

Similar proglem with my nuvi 600/650

I had a similar problem with my nuvi 650. After I logged onto the Garmin web site, connected my nuvi 650 to my desktop, and ran a program from the website to scan for any free map updates, the program "locked" my 650 and would only boot up to a screen that my maps were out of date and that I should buy an updated set of maps.

The program also screwed up my touch screen registration so the "OK" button on the Garmin didn't work.

After several exchanges of notes with the Garmin "technical experts", and several attempts to fix the problem, the experts told me that the unit needed to be sent in for repairs--BUT they were not longer doing repairs on the 600-650 units and I would need to purchase a new unit.

Wait a minute!! Garmin was responsible for screwing up my unit to begin with!! The unit worked fine up until I tried to get any free map updates from the Garmin website.

Gonna send it in return now and ask for exchange.

Been having the screen not responding problem science I bought the divice, and it's a pain. Can't even get to the menu.
  • Same Issues . . . .

I had the exact same issue outlined by users on this thread. Mine was a Nuvi660, and was in the "window" of Nuvi's that had screen issues (one of the posts had a list).

I went on ebay and bought a new screen from this guy: goodsupply0889 . However, beware, they ship from China and it takes a LONG time to get here - but it is not expensive.

The directions to do this repair are available - just search Garmin Nuvi 660 Screen Replacement. That being said, the directions are not totally complete - once you get the screen out you have to do a fair amount of disassembly to detach the old screen from the metal frame in the GPS that separates the touch screen from the "projection" screen, and then you have to re-attach the new screen, and replace the "insulation" that you have to carefully remove before doing any of this. While not difficult, this is not for the faint of heart, and the directions that I found on the internet did not cover this in any detail. Oh, and you need small Torx screw drivers to do the service - the Directions say you need T5 and T4 - but mine came apart just fine with just a T5. (BEWARE of the Spring loaded GPS assembly - easy to lose / shoot across the room).

Mine seems to be working fine now, even with the latest firmware and updates.

BTW, my GPS was about 5 years old when this happened, but it is BARELY ever used - so it wasn't a tough 5 years. The fact that Garmin is not addressing these issues is pathetic - but this was the cheapest solution I could fine given that I had already paid for lifte time maps and traffic.
  • I attempted to replace the digitizer touch screen on my Garmin Nuvi 660. I followed the instructions that are available on the internet, but I did not have the success that others have reported. The replacement digitizer seems thicker than the original, and so when I tried to snap the lcd back into the metal frame behind the digitizer, the digitizer cracked. I also damaged the lcd. The lcd damage was not apparent until I tried the to operate the gps. I am now going to have to buy a new digitizer and a new lcd. These are available as a unit for about $30, and replacing the assembly looks a lot simpler. I wish I had realized this beforehand.
