Data protection - Strava

My Garmin Connect profile is linked to Strava. I didn't want to share my activities publicly with my friends recently! I have therefore set the privacy settings (in Garmin Connect) so that new activities are only visible to me. In Garmin, the activities are also shown as "locked", but still appear for a few minutes with my friends and then disappear again. On Strava, however, all activities are displayed! This is unbelievable and unacceptable. I am considering taking legal action. I have now cancelled the connection to Strava.

  • The settings in Garmin got no effect on Strava. You have to set the privacy in Strava yourself. https://www.strava.com/settings/privacy

  • Thank you for the reply. Yes, that makes sense. But I don't think it's right that the data in Strava is visible to everyone, even though I've set it to private in Garmin. If I record with a Garmin device, then I should also have control over the privacy settings there, regardless of where the data is sent. Strava should automatically adopt this setting. I've learnt this lesson now, but it can have dire consequences for other people who make the same mistake.

  • You decided to connect Garmin Connect to Strava. Strava fetches the activities from Garmin when Strava is notified about a new activity upload and stores them on their side. Which privacy settings you have set in Strava is unknown to Garmin and Strava doesn't know which privacy settings you have set in Garmin.

You have to talk to Strava about the default privacy settings they use for new accounts.

  • Okay, I realise that. It was my mistake, but still badly done!

  • You could simply change the default privacy level for activities in Strava to followers or private.

I personally use a default level of private so I have full control over what I spam to everyone else’s feeds haha
