Training/Planning > Races/Events > Cannot Remember Location?

When visiting many website via my PC/Browser they often put an incorrect assumed location (say when I click on store locator). They typically are trying to get my location based on my ISP's location. I can re-establish my location using say zip code or city/state to 'find nearest location' for example.

Next time I visit 99 out of 100 sites, guess what? It remembers the location I entered. They use a technology known as a cookie to remember it. As long as I don't clear cookies I typically don't have to re-enter my location every time I visit.

But there's an exception. Yep, Garmin Connect.

Every single time I go to Training / Planing and select Races / Events to look for upcoming events - the site puts in a starting location about 200 miles away in some town I've never heard of. Why am I not seeing some of the upcoming races? Oh yeah - I have to change my location.

In this day and age I wouldn't think anyone doesn't use cookies for this. And heck Garmin has my exact address in my profile. But they determined to use this IP based incorrect guestimator anyway.

Or maybe there's a trick or browser setting or something to getting the website to remember my location?

(This feature works on my phone because it uses the phones actual location. It's just the website that doesn't work properly.)

Thanks,

  • Grant the site location permission, and it should be fine. Works for me, at least, without issues.

Please note that on some devices you may need to enable the location service also globally in the OS settings.

  • Thanks for the response. Yeah that's how my browser is set up. They are picking up my location thru my ISP and some sort of (flawed) IP location service. They locate the ISP about 120 miles away based on IP I guess.

I tried turning off location and it's no better or worse. Instead Garmin just shows me all events in the world. Either way - I have to manually enter my city/state EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Seems one hand at Garmin doesn't know what the other is doing. Garmin has my exact home address. And they provide the option to black out and not share running activities within a certain radius or mile(s) of my home address. That's a pretty cool and well thought out security feature.

But when clicking on upcoming events - Garmin doesn't bother to use the information it already has but rather makes a rough guess of location based on IP (which in my case is grossly flawed).

About the only way I see to fix Garmin's oversight is to pay for a VPN service and manually set my location to my actual location.

Thanks again for the feedback. While it doesn't work - it does confirm my suspicion of where the problem is.
