HR from watch overriding Edge 830

I ride at a high intensity earlier today. On my Daily Summary the HR for that period is around 80bpm. That's because my Epix Pro watch is incredibly bad at detecting my heart rate.

However, during the ride, I was wearing a chest strap (Tickr) connected to my Edge 830. The average heart rate for the activity was around 150bpm, peaking at 180.

What I don't understand is why doesn't the obviously much higher and accurate HR from the Edge override the inaccurate one from the watch; and also why isn't the Edge activity used to calculate "Intensity minutes"?

My summary says I've scored 10 intensity minutes today, but the activity was 30 minutes in Zone 5, plus 17 in Zone 4. I reckon that's a lot more than 10 intensity points.

So is there a way to get Garmin Connect to prioritise HR from a chest strap/activity over the dodgy optical sensor in the watch?

(As an aside, the watch is tight enough on my wrist, and my Whoop on the other wrist picks up HR much better. My old Fenix 6 Pro was more accurate than the Epix Pro, which is very disappointing.)

  • The HR on the daily graph always comes from the watch (the Primary Wearable Device). And that's what the watch uses for the IMs too. It means that in order to record the HR from the strap, you would either have to use the HRM-Pro strap, and disable the internal  wrist HRM on the watch (or removing the watch from the wrist), or you would have to connect your strap to the watch and start an activity on it (if no activity is in progress, the data from the strap is not being used)

  • Ah, wait, so I could just fix my problem by taking my watch off when I'm on the bike? That seems like a very obvious workaround that I should have thought of!

Are you saying there's something special about the Garmin HRM-Pro compared to my Wahoo Tickr though, and I _still_ wouldn't get intensity minutes if I just wore the Tickr without the watch?

Only if you have HRM-Pro, and if it is connected to the phone with Garmin Connect.

Yes, no other HRM strap (perhaps except the new HRM-Fit) has the capability to send the HR data into Garmin Connect directly without watch, and no other strap can process intensity minutes and steps instead of the watch.

If you do not have the HRM-Pro, then you have to connect your strap to the watch and simultaneously record the activity with it, in order to have the same HR in the all-day graph, and in order to have the IM counted correctly.
