Garmin Connect Web OpenStreetMap tiles woefully out of date

Garmin still offers an OSM layers still in their webapp (same tileset is also used for explore.garmin.com I believe) but it doesn't seem like it gets updated very often, if ever. Does Garmin plan on continuing to support OSM layer? Do they EVERY update it? It seems like the underlying router is updated more often since you can route on trails that aren't rendered. But that's not an amazing solution.

  • Ye, they update about every 4 years. BUT last time instead an update they outdated it.

Courses had 4 years old data - but moved back to 8 years (connectosm16.azureedge.net), looks like when they lately reworked courses they just copied the first found URL and didn't care.

Activities have still 4 years old (connectcache20.azureedge.net).

And yes, the heat-map lines are updated more often, something like 1 year.

  • So sad... I get that updating these is a PITA, but you'd think they could manage it. I'm guessing the move back is some kind of bug, but definitely not a promising sign. If anybody from The Internet finds this, I use gpx.studio to derive GPX from recent OSM, guess that will have to do for now.

  • This also annoys me regularly. It seems like literally EVERYONE does better than Garmin here. Komoot, Strava, Ride with GPS, just to name some examples, all manage to keep their OSM based maps up to date. Even hobby projects manage to update their maps monthly. But not Garmin. This should be a script that runs once a month, but Garmin just doesn't care it seems.

This especially annoys me because my are is poorly covered in pre-2019 OSM, which I personally changed by contributing to OSM. But I cannot use my updates it in the Garmin universe. Garmin Connect WebCry, Garmin Explore web, Garmin Explore App, all use the same ridiculously outdated OSM base. So sad... Cry

  • Should be more often, true, other sites update frequently.

Currently you can only open GPX in other map-viewer/editor or make a redirect add-on, wrote one in 2020: Map data is over 4 years old. Change the URL to current (connectcache20) and redirect to some OSM-like website - check tiles numbers' order and format.
