Garmin coach run completed but not showing in Garmin coach (but it has synched to my phone. How can I tell the Connect App or Coach that the run has been completed. Its there in the app, but Coach is ignoring it

I did my long run yesterday - starting the run out of Coach. It did everything as normal but when I synched to my phone it didn't register with Coach. I can see the run but it is a normal run and Coach wants me to repeat it. It was a LONG run and I can't. I'm worried that it will stuff up my coaching plan.

  • Yeah, I have the same issue. The Coach missed three of my runs. I've been in touch with Garmin Support and they asked me to share the activities with them. In order to do that I had to change the privacy settings to Everyone, as soon as I did that one of the runs appeared in the Coach.

The run that appeared in the Coach after changing the privacy settings still had the "missed" workout in the workout schedule. The two other "missed" runs did not appear in Coach but I had deleted these workouts from the schedule because it looked like they were being rescheduled automatically.

All older runs, and my most recent run, have the Connections and Group privacy setting and do appear in Coach.

Hope this helps, not really an answer but these are my findings.

  • Thanks Bernie - much appreciated! I'll try this. For me it started to happen after a software update on Saturday. I see another went through today so that might resolve it, but I'll also open up my privacy settings (not too bothered who sees a slow old bloke running ...). Also I run v early in the morrning and today I notice I had not read/deleted the morning report from my watch. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it, but just thought I'd mention. I'll keep you posted on how I go. I found Garmin "help"desk not very helpful at all (actually singularly unhelpful)

  • I've had the same issue since Wednesday. It was working fine up until then and on Wednesday morning there was a software update which did *something* (not sure what, I'm not that familiar with the FR 965 yet) but ever since then any workout I do, regardless of whether I start it from the scheduled workouts glance or the coach glance just doesn't get recognised by Coach.

Trawling the forums, I've checked the privacy settings (no change), rescheduled the workout in question forward then back again (no change), downloaded some tools to convert the raw FIT format to CSV so I could inspect a recognised activity against an unrecognised one side by side, but honestly, I can't see anything significant.

I'm going to leave it until the next week starts and see if it can clean itself up, but I don't hold out much hope and will probably resort to deleting the plan. Why Garmin can't just give us a simple method of attributing an activity to a coaching workout is beyond me. I'd be happy to do that if Coach got its knickers in a twist.

If it looks to be beyond repair, I may look for alternative adaptive plans - Training Peaks perhaps.

PS: How exactly did you contact Garmin Support?

  • I did all of the above (except download the CSV). Mine happened after an update. I saw another update went through on Friday so I had hoped it would resolve the issue - but it didn't. Today's long run (14km near death experience) shows on my Connect app but not in Coach. Greg (coach) still wants me to do one! I've now done a week of runs that are not being recognised by Coach which in turn affects the scheduled runs as, as far as Coach is concerned, I've done nothing for the past week, and he then schedules more of what I have missed. I too am tempted to delete Coaching plan, but my wife found out that because our half marathon is in Feb - she couldn't set up Coach as there is not enough time between now and the event. Plus, Garmin help human is being really helpful (see below).

I first emailed the help desk and that was worse than useless (effectively it said turn it off and on again). However, I did then call and got a really helpful human who has registered the fault, and an engineer will (apparently) be looking into it. Here are the details for the help desk - as I say call if you can rather than email (or at least that was my experience).

Good luck as it's a really, really annoying fault! (and if lots of people email it might then get resolved!)

  • It seems to work for me now, my last three runs got recognised by the Coach, they were all started from the Activities / Run menu and all have my default privacy setting Connections and Groups. I'm hoping it was just a "glitch in the Matrix" for me...

I contacted Garmin Support via the e-mail button on their website: https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?productID=73207&tab=topics

  • I hope this shows up at the end of the posts (the last being “Bernie” on 10 December).

I’ve had the same issues (runs not being paired with the coach’s plan even though they were on my Forerunner 265) — I even created a post of my own before I found this one. NOTHING I’ve done including everything listed in this thread seems to work.

Does anyone have any further suggestions?

  • I'm with you 2128642 - I trawled the Forum, tried everything I came across (apart form downloading and fiddling with the data [way out of my competence zone!] - none of which worked for me and then contact Garmin Support. I'm hoping they can resolve the issue.

  • I honestly can’t think of anything I can do to remedy the situation. If you’re in the coach menus, that button on the top right - the one with the phone and arrow (send this workout to my watch when you next sync) seems utterly redundant as the workouts were on my watch from a normal autonomous sync (why wouldn’t they be?).

I thought it may have been to do with how I started the workout, but I don’t think so. Doesn’t matter if I’m going through the workout menus or the coach glances (at least on my FR965). Whatever I end up selecting has the correct duration, breakdown, etc.

As we've said before, any proposed solution that involves changing privacy settings didn't have any effect (for me at least), and the other proposed solution from Garmin that involves rescheduling the workout to a day later, then back to today (with syncs) also had no effect.

The detailed suggestion that involved comparing FIT/CSV files for an unrecognised activity versus a recognised one didn't bear any fruit. In the author's case, his unrecognised activity seemed to be missing about 6 or 7 rows near the start of the file that stipulated workout-specific data, so he transplanted those rows from the recognised file, tweaked the corresponding timestamp, converted it back to FIT and uploaded to connect. I'm my own experience with this approach my unrecognised file wasn't missing any workout data and looked identical (in terms of layout/content/etc.) to the recognised one.

I'm 80% sure that it was the software update that knocked this whole thing off-kilter, based on my own experience and from what I've read in other threads. If I were to delete the plan (which I'm still reluctant to do), and start a new one, what's to stop another software update further down the line from having the same detrimental effect yet again? I'm 3 weeks into an 11-week plan so the time is salvageable.

I'm not sure how difficult it would be but some sort of facility to manually attribute a completed workout to your coaching plan would be a great solution while the underlying cause was investigated.

The reason I invested in my Garmin Forerunner 965 a few weeks ago was to take advantage of the adaptive training plans provided by Garmin Coach, so it's bitterly disappointing to see it misfire so early into this training journey.

I'd be happy to work with Garmin to troubleshoot the issue if they're willing. :-/

  • I too think it has to do with the watch OS update last week. Since the the update, the “watch-based coach” thinks I’ve completed the planned workouts and has assigned execution scores to each run. The “app-based coach” thinks I’ve missed the workouts and has adjusted its plan accordingly (which includes moving my long Saturday run - which I’ve already completed - first to Sunday and now to Monday.)

I’ve re-set privacy settings, moved training sessions, forgotten-and-re-paired the watch and phone, ad nauseum…everything listed in the various posts (which go back 6 years BTW - so it’s a recurring issue) short of downloading and manipulating the raw data files.

I bought the watch (FR265) and invested in the community on the recommendation of runners I know (yes; I am a newbie, but I am a former college athlete and university professor teaching data analytics so I do have some technical expertise.)
