Forrunner 965 / Intervals instead Laps

I bought the Forunner 965.

On Garmin Connect, "Intervals" are displayed instead of "Laps" !
Why ?

Can I change that ?
To obtain Laps" ?

PS : it's a problem for me because I use "Laps" to copy data to EXCEL, to analyse the session !!!

  • Here, 2 activities (I wear often two watches) :
    - one on the 965 (I get intervals) : https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/11572450401
    - one with Fenix 5S (get Laps)  : connect.garmin.com/.../11572482381

I do same "lap press" at same moment !

  • What seems a bit odd are the warm up and cool down parts. There was no warm up in the first activity you linked, but a cool down. I wonder how that works and how the watch decides if it should be "tagged" as that.

  • "I wonder how that works and how the watch decides if it should be "tagged" as that."

    So do I !

  • I did some tests with my wife's Forerunner 255 which is more like the 965 than my 945 and I can select intervals and select if warm up should be included when I start. I also see lots of informative texts about warm up, intervals, recovery etc. when the activity is running so if that mode was active you would see that.

You might get better answers in the 965 forum: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-965

  • Thank you Andy !

    Best Regards !

  • Perhaps a bug ?

Extract from User Manual page 10
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    Auto Rest and Manual Rest
NOTE: Swim data is not recorded during a rest. To view other data screens, you can press UP or DOWN.
The auto rest feature is available only for pool swimming. Your watch automatically detects when you are resting, and the rest screen appears. If you rest for more than 15 seconds, the watch automatically creates a rest interval. When you resume swimming, the watch automatically starts a new swim interval. You can turn on the auto rest feature in the activity options (Adding or Removing a Favorite Activity, page 20).
TIP: For best results using the auto rest feature, minimize your arm motions while resting.
During a pool or open water swim activity, you can manually mark a rest interval by pressing .

    I am not swimming.
I am running and starting a "Run Activity".

  • Newer Garmin watches will try to auto-detect running intervals even if you're not in workout/interval mode.

Like you said, this is probably happening to you because you're switching between running, walking and resting during your activity, and pressing the Lap button when you switch.

You mentioned that this is messing up your data export and that's understandable (as the exported CSV file now has intervals, with no way to expand the data into the original laps.)

You should be able to fix this manually:

    - open the activity in garmin connect

    - click the gear icon > Edit

    - click Edit Intervals

    - select all intervals

    - change the step type to Run and click Apply

    - click Save

Unfortunately I don't think you can turn this feature off.

  • Thank You.

    1) All laps are already on "Run" as step type.

    2) I changed the "Auto Rest" Parameter on "Swimming Pool" application and the BUG has gone !
This parameter does not exist in "Running" applications, only swimming.

    As more information.

I already saw that if I don't walk or rest during an activity, I obtained "Laps".
That makes me on the road of a parameter, somewhere in the watch software !

  • For anyone else reading this thread, I posted a workaround here:

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-965/340030/forerunner-965-intervals-instead-laps/1653563#1653563

    TL;DR

    - edit intervals (they'll all be initially set to "run" on the edit page)

    - change one interval to anything but "run"

    - change it back to "run" (so all intervals are "run")

    - save intervals

    - select intervals tab: you will now have one interval containing all your laps. expand this interval and select Export Splits To CSV. You'll have a CSV with all your laps and the one interval summary row at the top, which can be easily deleted
