Why doesn't the Garmin Connect software (web or android app version) NOT show direction arrows for courses? Without the arrows we can't quickly and easily discern course direction and then if necessary reverse the direction of travel?

Sadly 10 years later this feature still does not exist...
The Garmin Explore app will do this. But it does need to be a compatible device - Device Compatibility With the Garmin Explore App
Another less elegant solution is to use LiveTrack, then use the LiveTrack link to view your progress from the phone's web browser.
You can hover over elevation chart and move from start to stop, a dot appears on a course's path with the same position. So follow a bit like that to see direction.
Yes... this is a BIG mystery for me also. This would be such a welcome addition and should be easy to implement.
Same here, basic direction arrows over courses is absolutely needed, otherwise we're left guessing, especially on loops.
