Help: Calorie Counting.

Dear all ,

Something has changed in the last few weeks and i am not sure what.  basically the calorie count on my edge 1040 activities is not transferring to the "main system / connect "   So yesterday, while my ride use around 4000 (yes I rode 200km/125 miles) but my total count for the day was 3000.    What I think is happening is the "system/ connect" is using the calories count base off my heart rate / fenix7 watch which is not recording an activity and not the activity which is recorded by the edge.   The Edge number corresponds with my manual powermeter/time calculation, at this level of endurance heart rate alone is not accurate.

The thing is these numbers are important to me, to help ensure my calorie consumption is near to my needs and i done build deficit that could start to degrade muscle.  (I am also sure people dieting would be frustrated.)

Any thoughts on what to check greatly appreciated

 J

  • Instead of leaving the watch at home, you can just turn off the phone/Bluetooth connection on the watch before your ride and leave it off until after the Edge has synced.

To my knowledge there is no way of turning off BT on the watch (at least on my instinct 2), but I could certainly turn off BT on the phone, or disassociate the watch from the Garmin App. Both of those are not acceptable to me, so I'd rather leave the watch home.

I'll give this a try and see if I get better results, but it's still just a workaround. To not have this corrected with a software update by now is unacceptable given the price of these flagship devices.

Definitely agree with you, but cost/benefits analysis coupled with planned obsolescence may tip the scale towards the "not worth fixing" option for a company who has to prioritise profit above all.

  • Thanks! I was missing that option from the control menu. Added it now! Let me know how this works out for you.

  • Still issues, same as last summer with Edge 840. I even upgraded my watch from Fenix 6 pro to Epix Pro (gen. 2) and was hoping this would solve the calorie counting issue. Still same..

Most of the times when doing power meter ride with Edge 840 and HRM Pro plus (belt not connected / or connected to phone) calories are off. I've tried both syncing first the Edge then the watch. Leaving watch off and sync edge, and not saving the ride and wait to be indoors and first sync watch then edge. Nothing helps. I assume that this has something to do with power data even both devices should support it..

"Quite" frustrating as all the "recovery" etc. fancy sounding metrics are just useless. And both devices are high end ones. Similar results with all bikes with different power meters.

Please Garmin, this is production bug with multiple devices and lot's of users / customers affected. If you care about company profit, you should take this seriously. Soon you'll gradually see heavy users going away and most likely casual users following soon after...

  • Actually now it seems to work if i do following with belt, edge and watch connected to phone via bluetooth.

    1. Sync all three devices before ride, leave watch home

    2. Ride

    3. Don't save the ride when you end

    4. Wait to be with your watch again

    5. Open garmin connect, let watch sync and hrm plus

    6. Save ride on edge

    7. Wait for ride to be uploaded

    8. Wait all three devices to sync

    9. Eventually active calories are nicely set up (at least seems so after 5 rides)

  • Looks like there is a fix now? My Fenix7x got an update yesterday so I gave it a go today recording only with my Edge 840 and F7 on my wrist (not recording). Last year I have double recorded all sessions.

    -Calories seems ok

    -Intensity minutes ok

    -Traning status etc syncing ok

-Body Battery not OK, Edge gives F7 and connect high stress instead of adding the of the workout (look

  • As a follow up to my previous workaround, I wanted to share that I have been keeping the watch at home and the issue has not showed so far (10s of rides). However, I did try a couple of times to keep the watch on whilst turning off the BT connection to the phone and the issue did appear. I believe that not matter the state of the BT connection. when the watch is on the wrist it keeps recording data (e.g. HR). So, when the connection is re-established, Garmin may still need to reconcile data from multiple devices. On the other hand, when the phone is left inactive the sensors probably go in a stand by mode (i.e. the HR leds go off), so it only relies on default metrics such as the estimate on resting metabolic rate.

  • Looks like it’s just random or pure luck for me.

i was so tired of all workarounds so I gave it a go after last update (4.days ago) and it worked 100%. I had the watch on my hand not recording and recording with edge840 as normal. All ok, but last three rides after that not working anymore, BUT today it was all fine again so I don’t know…

body battery is still High Stress on my F7x tough!!!

  • Issue persists between Epix gen2 and Edge 840. Indoor bike training has huge discrepancy between calories and heart rate, Edge data is not being prioritized when it was recording the activity. Could we at least get a toggle to choose which data set to use for a time period if Garmin doesn't want to fix it by selecting the more accurate data?

  • So lets hope there is a fix now... I am now on my third day in row and its working (without any workarounds, F7x on my wrist and Edge 840)...

    Will keep you Posted....

PS: I still get high stress on my Fenix7x instead of adding the workout so Body Battery is screwed up tough..!!!
