Help: Calorie Counting.

Dear all ,

Something has changed in the last few weeks and i am not sure what.  basically the calorie count on my edge 1040 activities is not transferring to the "main system / connect "   So yesterday, while my ride use around 4000 (yes I rode 200km/125 miles) but my total count for the day was 3000.    What I think is happening is the "system/ connect" is using the calories count base off my heart rate / fenix7 watch which is not recording an activity and not the activity which is recorded by the edge.   The Edge number corresponds with my manual powermeter/time calculation, at this level of endurance heart rate alone is not accurate.

The thing is these numbers are important to me, to help ensure my calorie consumption is near to my needs and i done build deficit that could start to degrade muscle.  (I am also sure people dieting would be frustrated.)

Any thoughts on what to check greatly appreciated

  • This is still an issue 11 months later.  I am using a Fenix 7X Pro and an Edge 840.  The Fenix 7X Pro is set as my Primary Training Device.  I am in the US.  You can reach out to me directly.

These screenshots are of an activity recorded with the Edge 840 and HRM Pro Plus and the Calories In/Out page from the same day:

For those of us who track calories with MyFitnessPal, this also causes erroneous active calorie totals in that app.  This was not an issue with the Edge 530 I had before recently getting an 840.

  • They don't care or they would reply with a timeline for a verified path to a solution.

  • After A winter of happy Zwift training where my calorie burn in connect matches what is actually tracked I went back outside with my Edge 1040. Only to confirm what others are saying here - This issue persists almost a year after it's reported!?

We pay premium for devices with advanced metrics for almost everything, but we are not able to get an update that fixes how calories are counted?

    This is a bit sad.

  • Same here. Fenix 7Pro primary fitness tracker, with 1040 Solar primary trainig device.

Calories presented in summary on Connect  are only from Fenix, Trining data from 1040 is ignored.

  • Enduro 2 (set as primary device), also ride with an Edge 1040 Solar.  Physio Tru-up enabled, but active Calories is less than all my activities recorded on both devices.

Yes you have permission to contact me directly, yes you have perimission to look at my data.

  • I do have the same problem. Fenix 7 Pro and Edge 1040.. Pls give me a solution

  • The only suggestion i can make if you have this problem is to submit it to support as a ticket. and ask the question publicly about calories errors on their social media platform's eg X

It seems to affect all products!

at theis stage the more people that do ask the more likely someone is to care.

  • Same problem here with a Fenix 7X and an Edge 840. I own plenty of Garmin devices (e.g, four power meters, one for each bike) and have always been very happy with their products. But the long lasting problem with the wrong calories count starts to get really annoying. I'll will also submit a support ticket tomorrow. With an increasing number of support tickets by the community they will hopefully focus on solving the problem.

  • I have been trying a solution for the past week and it seems to have helped. Basically I make sure that the device where I record the activity (Edge 1040) synchronises with the Connect app before the watch (Instinct 2 Solar) gets a chance. Then, after that is done, the watch synchronises and the active/resting calories add up nicely.

This has been working but I'd still like it to run it a few more times before I confirm it is indeed a solution (or rather, a workaround). The downside is that there seems to be no way of enforcing this order automatically, or to temporarily stop the watch from synchronising, so I simply leave the watch home when I go for a ride.

My theory is that when I wear my watch during a ride, it keeps synchronising with the phone. Then, when I finish the ride and the Edge uploads and synchs with Garmin, the app (or most likely the cloud based Garmin software) has a hard time reconciling the timeline of the data reported by the two devices.  That would explain some of the randomness I noticed in the active/resting calories count.

It'd be good if people could try this out and report back on this thread. As for Garmin looking into this, I doubt they care. Working for a software company, I believe it's more likely that they'll fix the issue and release it on the next iteration of devices so we can all pay the premium to have this sorted and be annoyed by other new bugs.

  • Instead of leaving the watch at home, you can just turn off the phone/Bluetooth connection on the watch before your ride and leave it off until after the Edge has synced.

I'll give this a try and see if I get better results, but it's still just a workaround. To not have this corrected with a software update by now is unacceptable given the price of these flagship devices.
