That is not an argument for extending or augmenting features at no extra charge. Sorry, but it's time for you to recalibrate your expectations as a consumer/customer. There is no promise and no obligation on the manufacturers' part to allow (or help) you fully exploit the capabilities of device hardware you purchased, or provide features you're sure could be supported if they were of a mind to do so. Manufacturers are free to market and sell device models as (limited) packages of features and functionality, without providing just the perfect thing for an individual ticking all his/her boxes, instead of leaving him/her to compromise on retail price, device form factor (and/or weight), and features provided.

Wrong. HR data does not come into it.

And I'm sure Garmin would be happy for you to purchase a wearable device in its product range that can support tracking of naps in your Garmin Connect account.

Simmer down there, friend. No need to get defensive. :)

Garmin provides a wealth of tracking and stats in a frighteningly complex information domain. I get that. Overall, I think they do a great job at balancing priorities and features between activity, heart rate, sleep, calorie tracking, et cetera.

My point is that they've already done a lot of good work in the sleep tracking area including pretty reliable sleep detection, analysis, and basic running statistics. They focus largely on average sleep (since that's what matters most to health) which is great!

The only problem is, their average sleep statistics become incorrect if A) you have a device like most that has no manual sleep mode, or B) You nap and forget to clock it until later. Both of these are massively common use cases that deserve some priority on the ol' software backlog.

Basically, they're lacking a (small) piece to a key part of the software product. They have the concept of naps / multiple sleep sessions. They have the weekly averages. They have the auto-detection (and have started dropping manual sleep mode on newer devices like the VS HR+ in favor of it). They have dynamic adjustment of sleep times that will grab sensor data for that time after the fact.

Literally all they need to add is some UI work to manually add a sleep session that wasn't tracked on the Garmin Connect webapp and/or phone app. If they don't have too much technical debt on their code, they could probably develop and QA the feature on the webapp in 30-60 developer hours and 2-3 weeks of time. Probably similar times would be needed to add parity with the phone apps.

Not sure how you know that HR data isn't used for sleep detection or why that's relevant to the conversation, but good to know! Hopefully they'll add that soon if they haven't since HR data is a fantastic indicator of sleep state.

Also, for the record, I'm a software engineer so I'm incapable of having low expectations of software I develop or use. :) Low expectations of software always lead to terrible software.
  • I am not sure if it has always been there... ? But just noticed that there is a 'nap' section on the sleep data, but it's always at zero.

    8:30 Sleep + 0:00 Nap = 8:30 hrs Total

Is that a carry over from watches that had a manual 'sleep' button? or somehting?

Would be nice if there was an 'edit' pencil for the nap - then at least you could enter it after if you took a decent nap or slept weird hours on a certain day (flight...etc)

Bump +1 - Almost 4 years and nothing from Garmin :(
  • Well +1 since I guess it is more or less what I asked for a few days ago in dedicated 935 section : https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into...disturb-option
  • As someone who takes naps regularly, the fact that there is only a SINGLE dedicated sleep time in garmin connect is absurd.
Both fitbit devices I previously owned were capable of recording multiple sleep segments. This is also true of the Samsung healthapp
  • NauticalHamster, so use what you already know works (even if it is inconvenient for you as the user, and/or denies you the benefit of having everything in one place). It sounds more absurd to me when you know what the solution to meet your functional requirement is, but opt to whinge about something else instead of using what works.
  • Is there anyway to track Naps? I start workouts at 4am. So Naps are a must, but how can I track?

    Thanks!

  • There is no way to do it.

  • UGH! I wonder if that is something that will be addressed in future updates? Thank you for responding.
