The question is which one is right. Each of the companies uses their own method, and own algorithms. Only if you do a lab calorimetric test, you'll know which of the devices is closer to the truth.
Garmin's Calories are based principally on the heart-rate. Especially the Resting HR has a very important impact on the calculation of Active Calories, so make sure you wear the watch during sleep, in order that it can detect the RHR correctly.
