Walking activity includes run cadence

Hi, since August 24th my Walking and Hiking Activities contains now the Run Cadence. Which I wouldn't mind if they are correct.

Hiking with an Avg Run Cadence 73 seams to be possible but the Max Run cadence between 124 and 226 are a bit to high for hiking.

Walking with an Avg Run Cadence 109 seams to be possible but the Max Run cadence of 230 is very unusual for walking

  • The first activity (from Wednesday) looks actually all right - both the graph and the stats are credible except of the max value (although theoretically it is quite well possible to make a couple of quick steps with this cadence, even when walking). The graph shows only a peak of 113 which is likely the true max, and it is exactly the half of the max value of 226. Neither on the graph, nor in the background JSON, there is any value of 226, just in the overview stats.

At the second activity, all the data, except the avg. value is doubled.

To me it looks like your watch may be worn too loose, bumping around as you walk, doubling the cadence. Or you move in some untypical way, making the watch to double-count the cadence. Were the steps doubled too, especially at the second activity (Saturday)? It looks like there is some algorithm trying to suppress the double counting, but not working flawlessly - in the first case it left the double max value, and in the second case it worked on the avg. value only. I'd suggest contacting the Support and sending them the data.

  • I see the same with my walking activities. The cadence is over 200.

The running dynamics reports 103 spm in avg cadence which probably is correct, but the graph isn't showing that.

  • Hi Trux, thanks for the analysis. Saturday I did the walk 7.31km and some other steps at home and got 11'143 Steps counting up to 8.4km that day.

I do move my arms while walking or hiking, but not as much as while running.
I will try to pull one hole closer on Garmin Instinc so to be sure she isn't loose and do another walk and check it out again.

Because there haven't been any run cadence before August 24th I didn't saw a problem. my Watch SW Version 17.50 hasn't been updated for a while, so I am wondering what has changed to bring the new statistic into walk and hike.

  • Frankly told, and seeing Andy sees the issue too, either Garmin experiments with the cadence at walking (and did not tuned it up yet completely), or they enabled it by mistake. It already happened at least once, relatively recently (perhaps 6 weeks ago, or maybe two months). I am lazy to search the thread, but the cadence already appeared briefly at walks, in that time too, and I remember another user having problems with the doubled cadence too.

  • ... well, I found it. It was already 5 months ago (the time is accelerating more and more)

Edit: hm, it is not exactly the same thread I meant, but a similar topic anyway.

  • ... ah, so the cadence at walking, it was 3 months ago, but only very briefly, for a day or two, so perhaps it will disappear now after some time again too:

  • Hi Trux, I did a hiking yesterday and before the activity I pulled the watch tighter. Now the result seams to be the truth.

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/9506072421 I didn't realyze that depending on the temperature my wrist hasn't the same cirumference. I will keep an eye on it.

  • The graph looks better, but look at the average cadence. It is 76, but your cadence is almost always below 60. If I would guess I would say your average is 50-55.

  • Yes, indeed, both the average and the max cadence are still doubled. The new feature is still buggy, and not well adapted for walking. I suggest reporting it to the Support, so that they have some data to work on while tuning it up.

  • BTW, it would be interesting to see the results if you started the Running activity instead of Hiking at your next hike (but still walking in the same way as usually). I wonder whether the data would show the doubled values too, or not.
