Training Status In Garmin Connect

Come on Garmin!  I wear a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Solar.  I use a Neo 2T when I train indoors.  I own and use 2 sets of Vectors. One upgraded from the original and one second generation. I use an Edge 820 when I'm at the velodrome.  I use a Wahoo Roam on my road bike because the display can be made larger on the fly and that's something my 54 year old eyes need. Because of this, I upload my road rides manually.  Ok, I get it.  It's silly and petty, but I understand the business side of things.  Seriously though,  because I use a Wahoo and upload my .fit files from Strava, you won't use it to calculate training status?  I understand that I can start an activity on the watch, but it's sort of redundant and I don't need to suck the life out of the watch battery.

Am I missing something or is this just my reality because I use a competitors product that saves files in the same exact format?

  • The Training Status as well as most other data is being calculated in real-time by the processor of the device you wear. There is no processing of this data available (and often not even possible), on the server (or in the app).

If you use multiple devices, they can share data among them with the help of the feature called Physio TrueUp. You just need to make sure you turned on the option on all devices, and that you sync all concerned devices before and after each activity.

However, I do not think that your Wahoo is capable of sending the Training Status and other Physio TrueUp data to Garmin devices. You can ask, though, Wahoo to implement such feature into their devices Smiley

  • Thank you Trux.  If I'm understanding correctly, Garmin Connect is just mirroring what is in the watch rather than a data crunching tool like Training Peaks.  So manually uploading my rides into Garmin Connect has no effect on any relevant information as the communication between watch and GC is only one way.  Would the same hold true for data from my Edge 820 or will that communicate directly with the watch?  In this case, would I have to manually start an activity on the watch as well?  Sorry, this watch does so much it's hard to get a handle on all of it even from reading the manual.

  • Right, Garmin uses on-device processing, not server-side processing. If they moved the processing of all those tens of millions of CPUs in their devices to their servers, they would have to upgrade their data centers significantly.

I do not own an Edge 820, but I believe it does calculate the Training Status too. In doubts, check the User Manual. However, as I wrote, you have to enable the option Physio TrueUp on both devices, and sync both of them before and after each activity, so that they always work with the same data.

  • Maybe there are more changes coming later, but for now they've expanded Training Status for a few service, so the shift from only on device processing already in swing: DC Rainmaker - Garmin Training Status Now Includes Zwift, TrainerRoad, The Sufferfest and Tacx App Workouts
