"Time in Zones" ignores custom zones for running activities

Connect for web activity "Time in Zones" ignores custom zones for running activities. It works fine for walking and cycling. The result is that nearly all my running activity is shown as being in zone 5.

This bug surely cannot be too hard to track down and fix?

  • Have you looked at your Heart Rate Zones to see if they're setup correctly or need adjustment?

Device icon (top/right corner) > Device Settings > User Settings Tab > Heart Rate Zones

  • Yes, I have set up my heart rate zones carefully, based on actual recorded data over several years of exercise. As I said in my original post, the display is correct for cycling and walking, it is only running where the zones are incorrect and the default zones for my age are displayed.

  • This bug surely cannot be too hard to track down and fix?

To try to tell you better where the problem is, it would be helpful to see the screenshot of your HR zone settings, and of the HR zone of the concerned activity. It works all right for me, so am not quite persuaded yet, that there is a bug.

Also - is this an outdoor activity, using just a single device? Or do you use an external HRM belt? Or was it on a treadmill?

These are outdoor activities tracked with my Garmin FR35.

    Running: connect.garmin.com/.../4488685786

I do have a HRM chest strap, but it makes no difference whether I use it or not. It was not used for either of the two activities I have screenshotted.

  • OK, I compared it to my settings and data - I have the zones identical in all types of activities (bike, run, walk, swim,...), but I am using the mode "% of Max" (Percent of Max Heart Rate) in the Heart Rate Zones, instead of "% of Reserve". Perhaps the mode "% of Reserve" is dynamically adjusting, so I would try changing it, just to see whether it changes something.

Another possibility is, that your watch is not perfectly synced with the settings in GC, and/or that there is a separate HR Zone profile set for the running activity. I would verify the HR Zones settings on your watch, and look whether the zones are defined identically to the GC settings, and that no additional profiles are used for running.

  • OK - I changed to the setting in connect web to "% of max", synced to my device,

and went for a quick run!

    Sadly, the issue remains unchanged.

  • Hm, to me your time in zones look ok. Track beginning and end of each zone in your HR graph and the minutes spend in there match the percentage shown:

    Zone 3 (140-156): 0:27-0:36 = 9' = 22 % of 40' total

  • Hm, it looks as if there were a separate HR Zone profile for running. Strangely your GC settings page does not show the option for additional profiles for individual activity types (just like mine does), but perhaps it can be set on the watch and is indeed activated. Did you verify the HR zones settings directly on the watch?

However, I believe that the FR 35 does not have the option for separate HR zone profiles, and that's why it is not available in GC either. You may better ask on the forum of FR35, whether other users have the same experience. Also check whether you use the latest firmware version. To me it seems to be an issue with FR35, definitely not a general problem.

  • Yes, Ollypsilon, duration in each zone is consistent with the zones being used, it's the definition of the zone that is the problem. Zone 3 should be 152-166, according to the device settings I have configured. (see first screenshot above)

  • Yes, Trux, I am coming to the same conclusion. You are correct, the FR35 does not have the facility to configure separate HR Zone profiles for different activities that I can discover.

Interestingly, however, on the "activity profiles" tab of the "Device Settings" page it is possible to configure an alert for HR Zone for different activities, and the pre-configured zones for these alerts reflect the numbers I am seeing on the "time in zones" graph, i.e. for Running (out and indoor) the default HR Zones for my age are shown, but for walking and cycling the zones I have configured manually are used.

My firmware is up to date:
