How do you link and activity to a training plan?

Is there a way to connect an existing running activity from today to a scheduled training run on a training plan?

I went for a run this morning and it didn't register correctly. Now they aren't linked and saying I haven't done my training run. Other apps you can link on desktop.

Thanks in advance!

  • Connect does not always link properly, whether it starts automatically or you go through the training plan option, as I did this morning.

Actually there is no linking. You either start a workout, or you start a plain run. It is not a question of a simple link. It may not be the case at other apps, but it is so with Garmin. This is why I suggested using the app you are happy with, because it is questionable whether Garmin could and would add such feature without some considerable redesign of their system.

However, when you start a plain run instead of a workout, you can notice it instantly, because the screen is competely different at a workout. So when you see you did not start the desired workout, just stop, cancel the activity, and start it again, selecting the right workout through Activity Settings » Training » My Workouts instead.

What I wanted to tell is that it may not be as trivial as you imagine, to convert a plain-run to a workout of a training plan. On the other hand, it is realy trivial avoding the situation when you would need it - it is enough to look at the watch the moment you start the activity, and fix the problem before it is irreparable.

  • It is clear that this requested feature does not affect you, so this conversation is really null and void to me. Have a nice day.

  • I am sorry if I offended you in some way with the advices, but I believe that posting tips, solutions, and workaround at each topic on this forum is very important to people looking for help in similar situation. So do not take my advices personally - they are aimed to anyone who is interested in the way how to avoid the situation you landed in. You can quietly ignore them.

The same issue again. I saw "View Workout" on the watch, pushed start button and after 15 minutes I realized that I didn't start training activity but the "normal" one. It is so annoying! Garmin developers do you read this? Don't really understand why such a basic feature may not be implemented! Data structure is different? Convert it! Endomondo has that feature! It is system design issue.

A freak, did this as well, just my second planed workout so didn't really know what the difference on the screen would have been... With "everything" tracked it shouldn't be to hard for the app to remake the laps etc. to fit with the planed run?... Very frustrating

hi, sorry to hear about your mishap

or try this, no harm done when it fails (it should fail because of the missing ID)

I figured out a solution.  To briefly summarize:  a completed training workout shows up as an activity, but doesn't get recognized by the Garmin Coach.    Steps to solve (I'm using the Garmin app on an Android):  open the activity, click the three vertical dots in the upper right corner, edit activity, scroll down to Activity Settings, tap Event Type, change from Uncategorized to Training, tap Save.  Navigate to Garmin Coach and you should see your activity recognized as completed workout as part of your Training.  Hope this helps.

or the same procedure a little bit adapted

I had the same problem and the solution proposed by 1368706 actually worked with a little modification.

I already had the Event Type set as Training and it had not synced. I changed it instead to "Fitness" and it worked. I then changed it back to "Training" and it remained. I think just making the change in that filed prompts a resynch. It might be that any field might work but I can't tell as mins is now fixed. Thank you to 1368706

  • So my wife came up with a workaround after not setting her correct training run tonight.

Take note of all of the parts of your activity (total time, distance, min max cadence, HR, calories etc). Don't bother noting individual lap info as you can't update it.

Start your training run activity on your activity tracker (watch, bike unit etc)

Lap through the steps in the workout by just repeatedly hitting the lap button until the workout is complete.

Save it with no details and let it sync to Garmin connect.

Go back to the app and edit the activity. Update everything you can with the details from your original activity.

This should satisfy your coach and let you move on to the next scheduled training program workout.

While this may not be an ideal solution, Garmin coach does recognise the activity and works off the averages.

You can choose if you want to delete the original activity (or just remove the duplicate against your gear if you want to keep that up to date.)

They need to let you link an activity to a workout like Strava does.

Hope this helps some of you.

  • I did that too. It may not be ideal, but it works. Too bad you can't assign the activity of the added workout. I hope that the IT specialists from Garmin will slightly improve the possibility of editing the training with this function.
